I know this sounds like cheap slash, but how would would fans and critics react if Hoshi Sato was a lesbian? Despite Trek being liberal and uber-PC, the writers never touched on sexual orientation, as if they were afraid of upsetting American homophobes (which still seems much more "acceptable" than racism or anti-Semitism).
Maybe the writers would not make a big deal over Hoshi's sexuality (like in almost complete rubbish such as Torchwood, which made VOY & ENT fantastic in comparison), with her having a relationship with another female crew member that is not seen as abnormal and she could have a casual six month fling with the bisexual T'Pol that is just there, not made a big deal out of by other characters (well that could make good whacking material
