What if Hoshi was a Lesbian?

I know this sounds like cheap slash, but how would would fans and critics react if Hoshi Sato was a lesbian? Despite Trek being liberal and uber-PC, the writers never touched on sexual orientation, as if they were afraid of upsetting American homophobes (which still seems much more "acceptable" than racism or anti-Semitism).

Maybe the writers would not make a big deal over Hoshi's sexuality (like in almost complete rubbish such as Torchwood, which made VOY & ENT fantastic in comparison), with her having a relationship with another female crew member that is not seen as abnormal and she could have a casual six month fling with the bisexual T'Pol that is just there, not made a big deal out of by other characters (well that could make good whacking material ).

If Berman could write a sensible straight relationship, then I might feel happy about letting him sink his teeth into the big world of gay.

Hoshi only proved she was straight in one episode and that's only because T'Pol told the entire crew to get laid. If these people, the main character, only have sex once every four years, twice in Tuckers case depending on what I spent a night with a princess" means, or thrice if you count the bowl of holographic pebbles... How is it that anyone interesting in watching stories about romance and sex would keep viewing this show or think the show is being written for their prurient needs?

But surely there's some initiation or test or a minimum level of coolness one has to pass to be allowed to be a fictional lesbian, Hoshi Sato is far too beige to blaze any trails or challenge any boundaries.

Whorsi from the mirror universe was too cartoony to be allowed to monstify something as supposedly as casual as an affinity for girl on girl without it becoming tacky.

Find me some middle ground.

Babylon 5 managed to pull it off with Susan Ivanova and Talia Winters and nobody batted an eye. It was tastefully done and seemed realistic to most fans.

So many shows have handled gay and lesbian characters with class and aplomb. Star Trek is stuck waaaaay behind the curve.

All Talia and Ivanova proved was that if you're going to have the gay sex, then you have to be a mind controlled evil dupe who is going to be dissected by the Government.

The only proof(They did it, I can read a symbol fine.) was that when Ivonova looked to her bed to see her lover that the space was empty.

A year later Voyager's Borg Queen and jadzia dax were making out on screen. And I spat on B5 for not delivering what I needed.

A year later Joss Weedon is told that he can have some dykes on on his dinky Vampire Show as long as the L word is never used, their relationship is never expressly talked about about and you never see them kissing or holding hands... The Rules changed between seasons 4 and 5 to throw their love right the hell out of the closet and into networks face.

The gayest Hoshi ever got was the Vulcan meditation scene with T'Pol in Sleeping Dogs. So yeah - not gay.

I think people are forgetting a season 3 episode that involved a female telepath who scanned male/female members of the crew for the Xindy bio weapon.

Hoshi was in one of the scenes with the female telepath while exiting the turbolift and got quite friendly with the woman in question.
The vibe I got from watching the scene had a definitive sexual undertone.

But the writers would be too scared to make one of the leads openly gay (without stereotypes) as it was already mentioned.
I think that they couldn't bring themselves to give us anything more than looks and vibes.
They would start, but then back away for 'safety' reasons and go with the hetero route.

Making 2 f the leads openly homosexual would have been great actually.
One gay male and one lesbian female (who are not of alien species).
The other leads would remain being hetero.

But alas, I think we have to wait until a new Trek series is made ... or they do it in the movie.
It would also be stupid to just introduce the concept once and then never do it again.
Diversity is what the Federation is about, so it would be good to have a diverse crew when it comes to species and sexuality.

After all, that's the Trek future, so anything goes really.

Raijin was a waking date rape drug. There's a question of choice to be considered, she put them into a suggestive state where they'd be fucking their pillows and pets uncontrollably after Raijin got what she wanted, which wasn't sex at all, but simple nasty "information". She wasn't after sex, and no one had an informed conscious or rational response to her advances which were designed to cripple these humans sense of security and secrecy.

Only a cursory glancing blow had this to do with anything sexual.

Of course she wasn't after sex, but she also didn't affect Hoshi with her abilities until AFTER she got to scan her.
Prior to that there was an very high degree of closeness between Raijin and Hoshi that did in fact have sexual undertones.

There was also one other episode in Season 2.
Archer was watching a game of Waterpolo with Trip ('Vox Sola' I think the name of the episode was) and to my recollection there were looks from Archer and Trip that gave off a sexual vibe.
Of course I could be mistaken, but at least that episode in question displayed the closest thing to 'gay vibe' between two males.
That, and possibly Reeds interesting relationship with commander of the Macos.

With the screentime Hoshi got anyway, she might as well be asexual.

I knew they weren't going to have Hoshi and T'Pol gay because that would tie up the two femalc characters, preventing any romantic possiblities with the other main crew. And if you had them bi it would lead to accusations that TPTB were just putting in some gratuitous lesbian action before having Hoshi and T'Pol go safely straight again.

T'Pol informs the captain that during her orgasm she experienced a telepathic vision of the future, in which Archer's decision will lead to a phenomenon known as 'slash fiction'.

I'm angry at the TV, not you. Gays and lesbians are depicted as evil, or they have worst consequences thrust upon them at the drop of a hat. Unless you re a TV Executive responsible for neutering B5 and Star trek then I have no problem with you.

Besides the real example of how b5 treats "the gays" is when Marcus and Stephen posed as a married couple on their mars mission in season 4. Even though they were both straight, it did make it clear that enough of the issues that hamstring this society have been overcome in the next 200 years that gay people can be just as miserable as the rest of us.
