What if the away team beamed up a particle generator during the Enterprise-D's first year, Deanna Troi began communicating with the generator and then the generator killed her? The Enterprise-D crew mourn her loss.

Then she returns in an alternate reality and screws things up even further by taking the helm of the Enterprise-C and slamming it into a planet instead of the huge glowy plot-hole.

Benjamin Sisko is assigned on the Saratoga, but the Enterprise-D has lost her ship's counselor, Sisko is reassigned as that position, he is assigned on that ship for twelve months, Riker does not want a replacement and takes Troi's death hard.

No no no no. If Deanna Troi dies, her mother enters a fit of mourning but soon, out of obligation, takes up her job as ship's counselor.

And in a surprise twist. . . . Ezri Dax travels back in time after some adventure in the post-finale DS9 and becomes the Ent-D's new ship's counselor.

She hooks up with Worf again but this time it's in the past, and they keep her former self (Ezri Tigan) from knowing her true fate so that she doesn't screw up the timespace continuum. Then, Ezri convinces Curzon to let Jadzia become an initiate so that she will end up with the Dax host in the future.

In other news, Data gets a better sense of humor and the Joe Piscopo episode never happens

Riker tries to challenge Worf for Ezri's love but Worf defeats him in honorable combat, marries Ezri, and becomes 1st officer of the Ent-D on the same day.

Wesley becomes addicted to drugs and Ezri sends him to rehab, and in the musical episode Wesley covers the popular Amy Winehouse tune.

Picard and Beverly get married in season 5, have a son in season 6 and divorce in season 7.

Geordi becomes Lt. Barclay's "partner" in season 6
