What if Chris Eccleston wasn't meant to play the Doctor in the 50th..

...But rather, "The Moment"?

The War Doctor wouldn't recognize him as a future incarnation, and the 10th and 11th Doctors don't see the "moment" during the course of the story. Then, when the War Doctor regenerates, he takes on the face of the Moment so that he can never forget what he's chosen (or believes he has chosen) to do.

Re: What if Chris Eccleston wasn't meant to play the Doctor in the 50t

That's an interesting idea. However, personally I'd have been disappointed had he returned and not actually played The Doctor. In particular, it would've been frustrating to have him on the same screen as Tennant and Smith and not interact with them.

That would be interesting, but, I think it works perfectly with Billy Piper, since we are told the moment gained sentience one day, and that meshes perfectly for me with Rose being Bad Wolf.

It's a shame we didn't get Eccelston in the Anniversary, but, truth be told, I'm glad he wasn't the War Doctor. Even though, apparently that was RTD's idea, it wouldn't sit right with me, as I always got the impression using the Moment killed War Doctor's Incarnation. So, McGann would've been fine, but, not Eccelston, IMHO (Though, maybe Moffat would've written it in a way that I could get beyond my preconceived notion?)

Re: What if Chris Eccleston wasn't meant to play the Doctor in the 50t

I lament that he wasn't in Hurt's place. The scenes in the barn were clearly meant to be an occassion to reunite Christopher Eccleston with Billie Piper, and in effect conclusively tie the Bad Wolf plot directly to him, instead of a previous incarnation. Just the idea of the two of them acting out those scenes fills me with great sadness.

That said, I'd have also settled for Paul McGann, for completely different reasons, of course. Either way, no Warrior here. Keep the Forgotten/Secret Doctor for another time - its too good an idea to go to waste, which was in the 50th anniversary.

So, to add, I don't think it'd have been very fitting for the Moment to be a future incarnation. Like Christmas Carol (the book), Ebenizer shouldn't be viisted by himself from the future, but a manifestation of his life in form - which makes sense for it to be death, since he's dead in the future. Simialrly, its fitting that its Bad Wolf, as its from the Doctor's future.

What might've been an interesting choice for the Moment, however, might've Susan. Some of the lightness of that scene might've been missed, but it'd be a nice touch for the Moment to take the form of a family member of his.

I'd have liked to be a fly on the wall during both meetings he took with Moffat. He had to be seriously considering a comeback if he went that far.
