What if Burnham and Discovery were erased from the timeline?

I'm not saying the show will be terrible because of it. I have some hope of Discovery being entertaining. On the surface, it just reads like fan fiction to have a secret adopted sibling show up fifty years after the original show was produced, who is super special and critical to the entirety of the Federation's peace efforts with the Klingons.

It could be inspired, it could equally be stupid. I won't know until the show airs. But, right now? It looks like fanwank. In my opinion.
To be fair - she shows up (in Universe) ten years PRIOR to the events depicted in TOS (not 50 years after). ;)

[I also have to really wonder if the main reason Sarek and Spock never mention her is SHED DIES at the end of the series?:wah::rommie: <--- THAT would explain it... ;))

They can just do the George Lucas way of things and just re-release the old shows and reshoot a bunch of scenes with Sonequa Martin Green in it. TAS would be easy. They could also add her in Amok Time. Should make fans happy.

Yeah, it's one thing for new stuff to be revealed about Spock's family over the course of the series that Spock was actually part of, thereby giving insight and context to his character. Half a century later? I'm not so sure about that.

And I think the whole Sybok thing was a gigantic misstep anyway.

I really doubt the series is going to have a reset button where the TV gets erased with time travel. I'm going to guess that most likely the show is going to be written so that it more or less fits with the previous ones (while we'll need to see the show to be sure, the only place they seem to be playing fast and loose with canon is the visuals, which can be fudged over with varying degrees of success).

As far as Spock suddenly having a foster sister, I don't see a problem; none of the other shows established any information that would contradict that. (It's is a little contrived for Burnham's backstory, but that's something else.)

I still wonder who will play adult-but-younger-than-on-Kirk's-Enterprise-Spock (can't imagine them not having at least one scene together), Amanda, and Stella Mudd.

Why? Hell neither Sarek or Amanda were at the wedding (the fact this episode was written and filmed prior to TOS - "Journey to Babel may have something to do with that...) ;)

Not to mention the fact that when pon farr comes calling, Spock must answer, whether or not Mom and Dad get back in time. They can watch the wedding videos later.

Again I have to ask, how is it a secret? It's just unknown to the audience, just like every other relative of a known character. We don't meet them, till we have to meet them. Hardly unusual or limited to fan fiction.

So you're saying that by the series' end, they'll pull the same crap as Enterprise's finale, and make it so that it all was just a lie?
As bad as TaTV was, and I don't advise this lightly, you maybe need to watch it again. You nay have missed a few things.

Yup. I really don't get the big deal.

There are many, many potential reasons why Spock never mentioned her--or should I say never mentioned her within the context of the events on screen.

Let's not forget the 72 episodes and six films represent a pretty small amount (collectively) of their lives. It's perfectly plausible they got Spock and Micheal got together several times a year.

It's almost like the reverse of when a character leaves a show to go study dolphins in the coral reef and the other characters seem to completely forget they exist.

It really doesn't require an explanation. And I really hope the writers feel obligated to give one. That's just cheap pandering to a very small group of fans.

And, frankly, I've always thought TFF made the same mistake. Kirk's line should have been something like: "Brother? I'd almost forgotten you had one - you never talk about him."

If something never came up in 51 years, 13 movies and 725 episodes, trust me, it's safe to call it a secret.
Nope, just unknown to the audience, just like countless other backstory details added of the course of those 51 years, 13 movies and 725 episodes. When it's added is irrelevant. Year 1 or year 51 it's still previously unknown not a secret. It can only be a secret if the characters make it one.

Despite the many situations where it would have been natural and even expected that the topic would come up, Spock is a secretive man. If he considers mentioning it and decides not to, that's his prerogative. If he uses the lessons he learned from the things he doesn't speak of as a motivating factor to do something which otherwise makes no sense or at least seems odd coming from him, again, he can do that if he wants to.
