What if ________ had directed Star Trek _________ ?

why didn't shatner just pour a load of his own $ to get the ended he wanted? E.g just used his 4m fee for the ending.

He couldve filmed the original ending of all the gargoyles coming out the ground after the torpedo strike and them chasing KSB back to the shuttle with Scotty accidentally beaming one up thinking its kirk and having to disintegrate it but in doing so destroys the transporter. So kirk is on the run using 2 phasers and gets to the top of the mountain and fires both phasers at the gargoyles but there's too many but then the BOP arrives and blasts them..then kirk fires his phasers at the BOP before being beamed up..(as described in The Making of The Trek Films & The Making of Trek VI)

the gargoyles couldve been a combination of animatronic/puppets/early CG/animation/man in suits (as in Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Twilight Zone The Movie Nightmare segment, SW trilogy, Aliens etc)

dunno how 'god' wouldve fit in with all the gargoyles? maybe He would be like the overlord of them directing them/guiding them toward the trio like a big Dr Manhattan. (with FX alot better than what we got...in fact with the extra $ maybe shatner wouldve been able to bribe ILM to do the FX for the movie :D)

The whole Yosemite opening sequence is extraneous (and a waste of money).

The money saved in the beginning alone might have been enough to dress up the ending more suitably and maybe closer to what Shatner originally had in mind.

Yosemite was the best part of the film; it provided real character moments / living real life beyond the main plot. Part of the success of TWOK was the exploration of the long-lived relationships. Take that away, and you end up wit the cardboard "archetype" characters (read: lazy writing) seen in many Star Wars or Marvel movies.
That's only assuming you can't do better. And, yeah, something better could have been done done.

The whole gravity boots shtick alone was so cartoony it was embarrassing.

Back on topic, I'd've liked to see what John Frankenheimer could have done with a TREK film. He was over his long slump by 1985 or so, and he could have brought the edginess/grittiness that Shatner was longing for while also supplying everything else you want in a director. If you look at his hat trick of MANCHURIAN/7DAYSINMAY/THE TRAIN in 1963-1965 (and add SECONDS too), that's a guy who know what to do with both cameras and actors. And he got a really good performance out of Rock Hudson in SECONDS. Plus he sometimes used inexpensive or forgotten actors like Will Geer, so it wouldn't break the bank.
Great films. I just watched The Train again recently. Frankenheimer would have been a great choice.

They were already booked. It wasn't about bribery.

im sure something couldve been worked out $ wise to get those magic 'ILM' letters on the credits! (Shatner going round the ILM offices after hours with some signed photos and a suitcase full of cash :D)

Only one man should've directed all of the NEXT GENERATION movies!

Honestly, Frakes wasn't a bad director. It was the writing driving the direction for Insurrection.

I've wondered what a Peter Hyams directed Trek film might have been like. :)

If they had done another comical-bent for one of the TOS Trek films, Sam Raimi might have been a... Well, eccentric choice?

Very smokey and backlit, using general whole-room lighting rather than shot-specific lighting, like taking the worst visual attributes of TVH and tossing in some mushiness from the least-engaging and character-flattering shots from TMP.

But there's have been at least a few snappy dialog exchanges and probably a BLADE RUNNER homage along with some music that sounded pinched from THE PARALLAX VIEW and MARATHON MAN.

Oh, and Hal Hollbrook as a corrupt -- or at the very least, criminally cynical -- Admiral (see, there'd be ONE upside with Hyams!)

Hey I never said it would be amazing, I just thought it an interesting prospect.

I was thinking of the film Outland more than anything. Going in a more lived-in look for Trek with an ominous atmosphere.

Doing some nice low lighting work on the bridge with heavy backlighting from the consoles, and smoke from battle damage would actually be fairly ominous depending on the context. :)

BillJ, don't tell me you disagree with my completely objective assessment? Perhaps the commercial disappointment of INSURRECTION has tainted some, but even the greats like, oh, I don't know ... Peter Jackson, have a turkey, or two under their belts. It's part and parcel of showbiz ... the nature of the beast! Personally, I find INSURRECTION to be entertaining popcorn fare. And it wasn't a complete disaster, it just didn't bring in the business that FIRST CONTACT had. But I am certain - very confident, in fact - that had Frakes directed NEMESIS, or whatever would've been in its place, instead ... it would've been a strong entry. One for the books ...

I think both LeVar Burton and Roxann Dawson (too late to direct a NextGen flick) are better directors. Frakes direction has always struck me as pedestrian.

A TNG movie by Woody Allen:
- The TMP/TNG theme is played by clarinet.
- Because of his emotion chip, Data is flooded by philosophical and spiritual interrogations. Troi is now his psychoanalist, but she's not really able to help him on these issues. Picard and Guinan are more qualified, but they're a bit exasperated.
- Riker try to deal both with his father, his twin Thomas and of course Troi.
- Woody Allen is a former husband of both Pulaski and Guinan, he's perhaps a ferengi who chose to became artist or maybe Reginald Barclay sr. He shares with Data the same intellectual torments.
- Geordi and Worf talk about mid-20th century's authors...of course Worf says Camus is without honnor.

David Lynch
The conference room scenes would have included drinking really good coffee
And a deaf admiral!
And one of those little gold ambassadors from Journey to Babel, and he would be speaking backwards and dancing.

(lot's of red curtains)

A TNG movie by Woody Allen
The movie would feature Reg Barkley, but he would be played by Allen himself.

Because they're basically the same person.

:)

...and what of the holodeck programs...???

"Computer, run program 'Danny Rose'..."

Oh, man...once again I am SO delighted to be associated with this site, and once again this sh*t just writes itself....

...well done, Saint!!!!! :bolian:

It turns out that Gates McFadden also had directorial experience! Apparently, she had directed 1 (one) episode of TNG, because of it! I believe it was the one where everybody de-evolves and Riker becomes a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal? Wow ... that would've been something if she directed GENERATIONS, let's say. But I'm sure she would've reduced Doctor Crusher's presence even more than it already was, in the movies. And that would never do ...

A TNG movie by Woody Allen
The movie would feature Reg Barkley, but he would be played by Allen himself. But yeah, the Last night I was home alone in my apartment and I conjured up a threesome with me, Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren, and it was very very erotic. isn't not so far of an holodeck addiction.

Because they're basically the same person.
I agree, but Woody's characters are oftenly on the pattern of the divorced dude able to date a sexy lady...as Rom.

Another possibility would be Woody as Remmick, the unintimidating interrogator with a sucker death. It would include Beverly breaking his glasses.

Now, The Undiscovered Country by Mike Myers:
- Myers plays many characters, including Chang.
- Characters make finger quotes when they name a plan or a device. Of course, the names are puny.
- The Klingon starships are a bit reshaped...instead of having wings...they have balls. Of course, where do you think they are shot?
- The Enterprise's senior staff compulsively drop a lot of puns about Klingon foreheads during the dinner.
- Martia has a more suggestive name...and when she changes into Kirk: I can't believe I kissed you. Must have been your lifelong ambition. Damn it. You are handsome, baby, yeah!?
- Kirk and Bones or Spock reconcile after a big argument earlier in the movie.
- A starfleet flag officer is played by Charles Napier.
- Clint Howard plays Dimitri Valtane.
- Kirk and Spock decide to do the Scooby Doo ending, then Colonel Worf unmasks Colonel West.

Myers directing TNG: "I am Dieter of Borg. Your resistance has become tiresome. Now is the time in the Collective when we dance!"

"Pedestrian ..."

Roxann Dawson was easily the hottest regular they had on VOYAGER - despite being burdened with that Ludacris forehead piece - and she was fun! F-U-N "fun"! Anything she does is fine with me. Even if it's compete with (the always reliable) Jonathan Frakes for the job of directing ...

A bonus reason for me watching Agents of Shield was because Roxann Dawson and Jonathan Frakes both directed an episode. Personally, I think Roxy did a better job than John.
