What happens between TMP and WOK?

The autobiography of James T Kirk goes over that period briefly, they had another 5 year mission and then Chekov makes the request to transfer to the reliant since theres no room for advancement on the enterprise when you become a senior staff member, kirk blackmailed adm nogomura to get the enterprise back in tmp and the admiral kept him out there so he wouldn't interfere in section 31's affairs (i think it was S31)

GR is booted out of his own universe and the status quo takes over - business as usual. Stand back, nothing to see here that you haven't seen a million times before.

Section 31 is a lot like habanero sauce. Fine in very small and controlled doses and at the right times. Much more than that and everyone gets a little burned and nauseous.

I do like it but yeah its overplayed (they dont say section 31 or anything but its a secret group within starfleet including nogura, commodore decker, major (later colonel) west, and captain (future admiral) cartwright that thinks its okay to do things that violate the prime directive such as breeding monsters, killing chancellor gorkon, secretly preparing for war vs the klingons) they asked him as a test before he was captain of the enterprise something along the lines of "So you cant imagine a situation where you'd violate the prime directive in order to protect the lives of federation citizens?" and he said "I think its my duty not to" so he was quickly "reassigned" to the enterprise as captain to be out of their way and to replace pike who was an explorer and not one to want to go to war
