Spoilers What happened to Zhaban?

Unimatrix Q

Commodore
Commodore
Did he die because of an illness or was it an accident?

He didn't seem to be very old for a Romulan?

Or did Laris poison him to get it on with Jean Luc? ;) (Just a joke, but you never know...)

For the mods: Please give this thread a spoiler tag. Thank you!

The poor guy got Chuck Cunningham'd. He went to his room in S1 and was never seen or heard from again.

At least he got a shout out though.......

He was killed so there'd be narrative impetus to take advantage of the fact that Orla Brady's an incredibly capable actress and can create romantic chemistry in her scenes with the ever-reliable Patrick Stewart.

I kinda hate it, tbh. <_<

Although always having been a Picard/Beverly shipper, i'm now more invested in a Picard/Laris relationship. I like her a lot :adore:

To be fair, we don’t normally see Romulans live to be 200 years old like Vulcans either. Maybe Romulans die a younger age than Vulcans and Zhaban was old by Romulan standards?

Or maybe Zhaban just wanted to follow in the footsteps of Brian Brophy.

It's a time travel season so there's always the possibility he'll get to die on screen saving the day at some point.

The actor was probably unavailable. I guess the caracter died in a fermentation gas accident or was crushed by a barrel.

Although Jamie McShane, the actor who played Zhaban, has been working steadily, reading between the lines it sounds like this was a story decision and not one caused by McShane's possible unavailability. I think they went into this season fully intending to explore Picard's love life....that was something Patrick Stewart hinted at back when season one had just finished airing.

Laris was a clear fan favourite during the first season of Picard and I think the intention was to expand Laris' role by making her Picard's love interest to allow writers to answer the question why Picard never settled down with anyone.

I love Laris, I think she's a great character and would be a good fit for Picard. But I'll admit I'm still favour Picard/Beverly most likely because that pairing has been implied for over 30 years now and it would just feel like a more satisfactory pay off for me.

Laris killed him and collected 12 million bars of latinum as life insurance.

Jack Crusher'd

He's involved with ither shows. So wasn't available.
Though to unceremoniously dead him ...

Yeah... that was quite unnecessary to have him killed like that.
Couldn't they just said he went on to live somewhere else and wanted to see the rest of the Earth?

last season ended up with Oh flying back into Romulan space, where she'll inevitably be punished for her destruction of the Romulan rescue fleet 15 years ago by the Romulan Free State. As Zhaban was former Tal Shi'ar, he would've been welcomed back by the Romulans and vindicated for throwing his lot in with Picard, etc. and could be said to be busy dealing with Romulan political stuff.
Zhaban filed a complaint against that Federation journalist for lying to him about asking Picard about his resignation from Starfleet. She hunted him down and vaporized him, resulting in the biggest scandal in Federation journalism since the, uh, Tomed Incident.

As with Jack Crusher, Picard secretly murdered him so he could have his wife...but was then so overwhelmed with guilt, he couldn't make good on it.

Although, Laris is probably secretly pregnant with their super-genius love child, Lesley. Picard will never acknowledge her, but he'll make her an acting ensign on the Stargazer.
