I for one am happy to have new Star Trek movies to watch. And they're not based on TNG nonsense, they're based on TOS! I'm not completely satisfied with these movies, but I find a lot there that is enjoyable.
I like the fact that Quinto consulted with Nimoy about how to play Spock. I like that Urban puts so much effort into playing Kelley's McCoy. I like that Abrams consulted with Takei about how Cho is Korean, and would that be okay for him to play Sulu? It gives the feeling that there is a kind of respect and reverence for TOS there, that they are trying to do right by the franchise, and I really appreciate that. I don't like everything about the new movies, but I like enough.
Can't wait for the next one.

I should hope Takei thought that it would be okay for a Korean (Cho) to play a Japanese helmsman, since a Japanese man (Takei) played a Vietnamese in The Green Berets.![]()
Plus, Sulu was not exclusively Japanese anyway. So why should it matter?
Did they ask Nichelle Nichols about Saldana playing Uhura?
