When I had an aquarium a few years ago I never changed the water in that sucker. I had the bubbler/filter thing of course -a fairly heavy duty one- I had a couple of algae eaters and a couple of other devices in there that "maintained" the water for me. (For the record it was a fresh-water tank.) Every so often I'd add in a replenishment for the chemicals.
I figured that God never comes down, pulls all of the fish out of the ocean, while he scrubs down the rocks so why should I do it?
If some algae built-up on the glass I'd reach in with a brush and scrub it down a bit. The fish I had survived in their very nicely and we had a very low mortality rate. When DID the fish die? When I changed the fucking water that first time. I lost my favorite fish that way.
