What happened to choosing a name for the doctor?

The only reason he cared about a name was because of Kes. She helped him evolve. She was key to his evolution. She never accepted him as JUST a hologram. She felt he needed a name. When she was gone, it became irrelevant, I think because during his development beyond a mere EMH he realized he was more than just a name. People called him Doc and The Doctor. He was content. The only reason he settled with a name in the Finale was because he got married. He said so much. Needed something on the certificate or something like that. I actually loved that he picked Joe, because it showed how irrelevant it all became to him. He was the hologram that shined the light on holograms having rights at all. That was pretty epic. Dude was beyond mere names!

And yes I still squee when he shows up on any scifi show I love.

Maybe they were trying to imitate Dr Who.:)
I consider it an homage to Dr. Who. :techman:

The tardis lands on voyager, the timelord comes out and says i'm the Doctor, Janeway says i don't think so the Doctor is in sickbay. :)

That's nothing.

in the X-Men vs TOS crossover comic book, Nurse Chapel is in some distress, so shouts out "DOCTOR MCCOY!!" To which simultaneously Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Doctor Hank 'The Beast" McCoy both reply "Yes?"

I went to a trek exhibit soon after voyager started where the doctor was identified as "Zimmerman." Since it was an official exhibit, I figured that was what they were going to settle on, but nope. It is just odd that this was left open. I mean, there was already a "the Doctor" in science fiction.

They did originally plan to name him "Zimmerman" during the first season - so sure were they, that they instructed the novel writers to call him that. And so he's called Dr. Zimmerman in the first (or is it first two?) Voyager books.

He was also called "Doc Zimmerman" in the Voyager trailers on old DS9 VHS tapes.

He is called "Zimmernan" in Book 2 (The Escape) and Book 4 (Violations) http://lynx677.110mb.com/bookreviews.html

Which is the reason I've always referred to him as "Zimmerman".

However, after further consideration I think his name should be Shmullus Zimmerman. :bolian:

In the Beowulf episode, he took the name Sweitzer. That obviously didn't stick for some reason.
It's because "Schweitzer" was Freya's last word and therefore reminded him of the pain of losing someone.

Exactly.

I've been watching a lot of voyager, lately, and have been realizing how integral the Kes character was for the Doctor. She was likely even responsible for saving him in the episode the Swarm.

I would have preferred he was rebooted.

The Doctor as an asshole like he was in the pilot was a much more enjoyable character.

I think it was because him being just The Doctor defined his character as being a emergency hologram, the writers early on picked up on this and gave up on giving him a definite human name.

ROFL. "Joe". If that isn't an EPIC FAIL i don't know what is.
"It took you 30 years to come up with 'Joe'?!" haha yeah i guess it does seem like an epic fail if someone says it in that way.

Maybe one warning about Future Catastrophe did come back with Kes from the Before and After Timelines?

"Doctor, you'll be a laughing stock. You keep finding a new name for yourself every month. You don't have the sticktudity to keep one name, for your own sake, for your reputation as a sane entity, just call it quits before you have 80 revised birth certificates."

My guess is that they left too late to give a name. His holographic creator should've given him one at the point of completion. But did he need a name, after all 'Doc' says it all, a name and his profession allin one.

You know when you're playing spore and you have to log off your brother and sisters/flatmates/wifes saved character game settings, to get to the game you are playing?

The Doctor is a game the crew played.

All the crew are on different levels of the game playing to different degrees of excellence and even at different difficulty levels, considering the doctor has access tot he ships psyche profiles he doesn't want to shake anyone up too much.

Different social networks/clusters on Voyager were at different points in the game and some less heartless assholes down in the lower decks had actually named him and had sex with him...

Considering how the universal translator seemed to work, that your mind/perceptions were altered telepathically by the ships computer to view that aliens not Speaking English were speaking English when they are standing in front of you and if you were deaf you could read their lips in English no matter what language they were speaking...

No one would be none the wiser if the Doctor had a hundred names because the ships computer controls the appearance of the spoken word.

Printed too probably.

The doctor's search for a name was a metaphor for his search for his own humanity. Besides, he had 3 names: Shweitzer, Shmullus, and Joe. :thumbsup
