What happened to Captain Stiles of the Excelsior?

Maybe Starfleet demoted him to kitchen duty when they noticed that he was more concerned with filing his nails than with running the ship.
That'd be a devastating critique of his command style if it actually matched his behavior.

What if Styles were off-duty at that time? Personal affairs are personal affairs.

Beauracracies always promote the biggest horses's asses they can find, so I would not be surprised to find an Admiral Styles roaming the halls of Starfleet Command.

In Peter David's TOS novel The Captain's Daughter, he also gets the nickname "Styles Without Substance."

That nickname is also referenced in the new "Excelsior" novel, "Forged in Fire" by Martin & Mangels, which works both as a prequel to DS9's "Blood Oath" (TOS Klingons and Dax vs the Albino) and a follow-up to the Sulu/Kang sequence in "Flashback" (VOY).

The authors also tell how the transition was made from Styles (and his swagger stick) to the recently-posted First Officer Sulu. It's a great read, and Styles gets some good lines.

I love James Sikking, I think he's a great actor, but my God he made me despise Styles with a passion.

Well, for an interesting proposed take on a younger Styles, see the novel, "Prime Directive," where Lieutenant Styles is made acting captain of the wrecked Enterprise, and he's a total pain in the ass to Scotty. -- RR

They also list Trek IV as being set a year later than III, so presumably, he was Captain of Excelsior for a while longer. If one likes apocrypha that is.

No way, Trek 4 takes place like a week or so after 3

Alright 3 months works.. but certainly not a year

Depends on which stuff you include in your personal continuity. DC Comics had Kirk captain the Excelsior for many exciting adventures between ST III and ST IV before Styles won it back.

Totally mate.

Always kick the arrogant blow-hards far enough upstairs so that the only people they need piss off are their caddies and golf partners. :D

I certainly don't envy the DC writers and editors. They had to spin off a year or two of new adventures, then set everything back exactly as it had been for the next movie installment!

Well, of course, when they started post-ST III stories, DC didn't know exactly what ST IV would do with Spock. Paramount could have just set the movie a few months/years after ST III and had Spock fully recovered, in which case the comics-induced virus that sent Spock back to an inert state (fixed once already by Mirror Spock's mindmeld) would have been unnecessary.
