I just finished watching all seven seasons of The West Wing. Though it was uneven, and started to get soggy in the middle, I loved it, and watched the whole series straight through in about two months.

Now with virtually every old series available on DVD, what other series do you consider "must see"?

To give you an idea of my tastes, some of my favorite shows are:

    Frasier
    The Simpsons
    MASH
    All in the Family
    West Wing
    Six Feet Under
    Rescue Me
    Brothers and Sisters
    Soap
    nuBSG
    Buffy
    Angel
    nu Dr Who

You looking for shows that you can go through start to finish on DVD right now? There are a lot of good shows on DVD that are still airing, so I don't know how patient you are.

A small gem is Boomtown, a pretty unique police show from NBC. The first season is the only one on DVD (season two only lasted six episodes and changed the format), but has a satisfactory last episode, so that might be worth a try. Not a very long commitment.

Nowhere Man and Earth 2 are only one season long, but I don't know how those ended.

Some even quicker commitments are Daybreak and Kidnapped, each only 13 episodes but with conclusions.

If you want to put in more time, Homicide: Life on the Street is seven season long.

Firefly wasn't on your list, have you seen that?

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was pretty good too, not on DVD yet, but I'm sure Mr Internet would help you out...

I don't have anything to add for shows that finished their run, but as for shows that are on right now...

    Pushing Daisies
    - weird, quirky, Tim Burton meets Amélie and totally unique, dark humor abounds.
Dexter - dark and a superb morality play, plus you like Six Feet Under and Michael C. Hall is the star of Dexter
Californication - off-beat humor and superb commentary on today's media environment as well as every-day life, IMHO.
Boston Legal - stars the Shat and he's awesome in it (and James Sapder, who just rocks no matter what), as well as more off-beat humor coupled with current issues (with a liberal slant)

But then it seems to be everyone is missing that show if my review threads are any indication. :p

I've only seen season 1 so far but it's spectacular on every level - I really can't rave enough.

You have some comedies on your list, MH--I would recommend Arrested Development, Weeds, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

As for dramas, The Sopranos hasn't been mentioned yet, and I highly, highly recommend that series.

    Hope that helps a bit!

Shows I would recommend to anyone:

    Dexter
    Deadwood
    Wonderfalls
    Dead Like Me
    Pushing Daisies
    Jonathan Creek

If you are interested in history at all, the Sharpe's series and Young Indiana Jones are now out on DVD, and are generally very good.

I second Aargorn's suggestion of Boomtown. The first season is darn near perfect.

House may be my favorite show of the past several years. Since it's currently still airing I'd say it's a must to check it out.

Based on Six Feet Under you might like the other HBO shows like The Sopranos, Deadwood, and Rome. The Sopranos is my favorite series of theirs.

    Also

    Lost
    Boston Legal
    Babylon 5

are other series I'd recommend to just about anyone

I knew I forgot something: Carnivale!

How about Over There? What an amazing show-its about the Iraq war-lasted one season but dang it was goooooood! Echoing others-Firefly(must,must,must!), Dead Like Me(who thought watching people die could be so much fun?) The Riches(season one is on dvd I think), Space:Above and Beyond(IMO), Stargate SG-1(most seasons can be had for $29) and if you haven't seen the new Battlestar Galactica then you just don't know what you are missing. Oh, and Futurama is actually better overall(IMO) than the Simpsons. Also, the cartoon Batman Beyond was pretty good, too. and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr starring Bruce "The Chin" Campbell is a rare gem.

One that hasn't been mentioned and I should have mentioned earlier: Oz. Brilliant series about prison life, but don't watch it if you're queasy.

Twin Peaks - Quite a revolutionary show back then. One of my favorite shows from before the 90s.

FYI, listing your tastes NEVER works in these types of threads. People are just going to tell you what they like no matter what. And if you don't agree with their tastes, they might put a hit out on you. :p
