What does everyone think about Admiral Cartwright?

Well, I can't imagine the Federation or Starfleet sanctioning either act, so if we're to assume the Federation did play a role, either it was an unsanctioned role, or they must have strayed pretty far from their ideals.
 
Blowing up the Klingon homeworld was very much on the agenda some thirty years earlier. A generation of Admirals may have been weaned of the idea back then, but the people on Cartwright's watch would be from the next generation. Genocide is not just a word: it's a General Order.

And Spock might well have considered Nero's wife an acceptable price to pay for unification a couple of centuries down the line. He did once establish that his dad, like any good Vulcan, would approach murder in cold blood. And his actions late in his (second) career would be poster children for unsanctioned...
