What do you want to see in the first Discovery Trailer?

We've had that pre-teaser, and the behind-the-scenes teaser. A full trailer is inevitable at this point. What would you like to see in it? How much of the series plot should it give away? What should we learn about the new crew and other characters? Should there be continuity nods to appease franchise fans? What sort of statement should they aim for?

I remember seeing the first trailers for Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, etc. Given the general consensus that this Trek series will be more serial in nature like more recent sci-fi TV, one wonders how much - or little - CBS will decide to show us with its first official look at the new part of the universe. How much is too much? What's just the right amount these days?

The overall look and feel of the thing. Sales pieces usually misrepresent narrative to a great degree, so I don't pay much attention to that.

I want to see the ship and beautiful space shots, a mission statement but nothing too specific (if this was Voyager the goal of getting home would be what I want but without details where they are and what got them there), shots of the characters, some pew pew action.

That's enough, I definitely don't want tons of dialog or character profiles, that tends to be really boring. I'd prefer the first trailer to be fast paced, 30 seconds in length max.

Enterprise's first trailer was pretty good as I recall, premise of the show in voiceover, with some generic spacey shots which turned out to be from the Titles, then a bit of a montage of characters delivering cool sounding lines from the pilot and I think episode 2. Nothing particularly original but it made it look fun.

I want them to show us the new look klingons. After the famous photo this what everyone really wants to see. It, alone would answer a ton of questions about the nature of this show being a reboot or being something that fits into the prime universe. Plus it would be very Star Treky since the Klingons have been apart of the franchise since "TOS." It would make people feel either nostigia or excitment to see a fresh new take on something old and familiar.

Better CG for Discovery

Only a very brief shot or two of this, just enough to establish it's a "space show."

Want to see all the main characters in short snips, then something where a couple of characters are speaking of the show's basic premise.

Example of theme music, no voice-over please.

Ending in a few seconds of essentially meaningless action and pew-pew.

The ship, the crew in the uniform and some of the inside of the ship. And a little info on what it's about.

Ten seconds would be sufficient.

Who the characters are.

What the characters want.

What the basic premise of the show is.

What the tone and style will be.

How cool the visuals will (or won't, but it's premium modern TV, so we know it will look good) look.

That's the badger. Still think that's a pretty good trailer, gives the main cast an introduction, a few Star Trek nods like phasers, and sets up the premise of the show. I still remember us dissecting screenshots of it on here.

Number One spacediving into a planet's atmosphere shooting at a Klingon warship with a phaser while the fanfare plays.

The STNG trailers and timeline are what I compare DSC to, because of the long layoff between shows.

Trailers, especially tv trailers were not nearly as big or important back then but fans of the time did notice them. Aside from some quick 30 sec trailers and an Entertainment Tonight behind the scenes video, the most noticeable trailer for STNG came at the start of the STIV VHS. I kind of like that style of trailer.

Incidentally, there was a 1 min trailer for STNG at the beginning of the summer before it's premiere, and I've never seen it again, not on youtube or anywhere. It's like it disappeared.

So I've been following the links on these videos for about 25 minutes now, and I've come to one conclusion: the people behind promoting Star Trek over the years, in all its forms, have been exceptionally poor at their jobs.
