what do you want the move to be about

I want it to be about two hours long.

And entertaining. After that, I don't really care. The rest of it is all sturm und drang.

TGT

You'll probably have to wait till the 19th men for that to happen.

Alien dwarves in some exotic color are what is needed. Deep metallic blue, perhaps, or some sort of pulsating magenta hue. They don't need to be central to the main plot, but they should be in there. :)

In fezzes. Don't forget the fezzes.

On the whole, I'd like to see a more balanced focus on the crew. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy can still be the central characters, but I think that, ideally, the movie should establish the value of every regular, and cement the idea that this is the finest crew that ever ran a starship, because if they aren't, then why bother to center a movie around them?

The Lord of the Rings films, to pick one example, excelled at this, and would be a fine model for the filmmakers; in them, even the most undignified comic-relief characters pulled their weight when the shit went down, and had perspectives of their own that the films slowed down long enough to explore. That's the sort of rigor Star Trek should have.

I just want to be walking out of the theater and say, to no one in particular:

"Holy shit. That kicked ass!"

How they get me to say that is not so important.

That would go for me, too. Get me out of the theater wide eyed and jaw gaping, only to turn around and walk back to the ticket counter and say, "one more, please". :D

I want to see Kirk move from his parents' basement in Riverside, Iowa, to a cool bachelor pad overlooking San Francisco...

Well, you did ask what you want the "move" to be about.

I'd go for a B-plot detailing Spock's move from his parents' basement in ShiKahr, to his Great Aunt T'Pol's spot in the Vulcan compound in Sausalito...

or Scott's move from his parents' basement in Linlithgow to an apartment over a pub in Aberdeen....

or McCoy moving when finally leaving his wife... sleeping in a patient room in Starfleet Medical in the meantime before the Enterprise posting is offered to him by Kirk.

Yes, any of these moves.

I want the movie to be about yay big.

I want it to be about something new while fitting into established Trek history. We certainly don't know a whole lot about Kirk & Co.'s early days so there's a lot to fill in with plenty of room for fresh ideas. With so little established, it should be easy to stay within canon. I also realize that every movie has had its share on continuity errors. But we've also learned about background stories that were never even hinted, such as Carol and David Marcus.

Yeah, I'd like to see that sorted out... how Kirk tries to overcome Carol leaving him, by a succession of relationships that don't work out.... Ruth, who tries to "heal" him.... Areel Shaw, who is drawn to his intelligence and wit... Janice Lester... who sees in him what she wants to be... and Janet Wallace, who is the mature Carol-like woman... who also takes a deep space mission when Kirk goes off on Enterprise, and then falls in love with Theodore....

Hmmm, that "progression" makes me think a young Janet is the correct role to be in the movie, and where Keri Russell would be cast. "Interplanet Janet, she's a galaxy girl...."

But anyway.... I think that having Janet in the darn movie makes sense... that puts some explanation into the sort-of-tension with the similarly named Janice, that is to say Janice Rand.

Not sure about Helen Johannson, I've always gone with the theory that Helen Noel is the same Helen, that perhaps she married just after she left Enterprise after Dagger of the Mind, or that she divorced a Johannson, just before joining Enterprise... she does "know" the Captain.. which would make Miss Piper's comments in Menagerie make sense.

Absolutely. Goes without saying. ;)

I want to see Spock jam on the Vulcan harp with some jazzers, one of which is an ancestor of Riker on trombone. And kick Jim's ass in 3d Chess.
From McCoy, the very first "He's dead, Jim."
Establish other relationships, like Chekov and Sulu as buds. See the scene where Sulu gets the Enterprise and Chekov doesn't. So sad. :)
Uhura breaking hearts and busting balls.
Scotty doing his thing as always. Of them all I think he may be the most archetypal.
