What do you think would really happen if a Godzilla style monster was real?

i would start a new religion/cult that would worship the monster..
we would run naked into the forest at night drenched in chickenblood
and hoping that the good monster would befriend us.

IIRC, Godzilla is frequently referred to as "he" in the Japanese movies. In the American movie from 1998 Godzilla has babies, so that one's probably a she. Maybe we should just start saying they just to be on the safe side.

Rocky just joined, he is now gathering chickens for us...enthusiastically so

I never even considered the weight angle. So are we saying then that Godzilla if real would be more like a giant Lizard that walks on all four legs or would he still be to heavy to exist even with the weight being held up better basically by a two extra legs.

When I watched the Emmerich Godzilla film as a kid, I thought it was unrealistic that the New Yorkers would be demanding to return to the city before they know for certain it's safe. Now I think that if a monster did show up, large groups of people would demand the right to continue working and partying while the city cumbled.

Depends on the time frame, the size of the monster, how much it could destroy, and if our weapons could kill it.

Too heavy to exist in either configuration.
Here's a decent article with the basics on this very topic from Popular Mechanics: https://www.popularmechanics.com/culture/movies/a10476/the-impossible-anatomy-of-godzilla-16785535/
The article said:
The force on Godzilla's bones is roughly 20 times greater than the force on a T. rex's, so his bones would need to be phenomenally strong—about twice as tough as some titanium alloys.

I believe any points about caloric intake are actually moot, since the Big G is supposed to be sustained purely by radiation instead of food (at least past movies said so; I'm not sure what the current lore says in that regard).

If they tried to explain this in a movie I wonder what they would go for. I think I might go with the idea the radiation somehow thickened his bones making them stronger thus allowing him to hold his weight. Also for food maybe he lays eggs and eats them which is why you only have one Godzilla.

I remember the novelization of the Emmerich movie acknowledging the "theory" that such a giant creature could not exist, and simply said that "obviously, we were wrong". Those are not direct quotes, I'm paraphrasing from 20 year old memories.

That ... doesn't appear sustainable to me.

To give a serious answer, I think we'd get a pretty diverse set of reactions, some people panicking, some refusing to believe it exists, some wanting to kill it, and some wanting to protect it.
I don't know if the governments would jump right to trying kill, I think we'd see at least a few attempts to try to lure it away from populated areas. Once that doesn't work we'd see the military go after it, with bigger and bigger weapons being used as it got closer and closer to land. Unless they could be sure everyone was outside of whatever city it was headed towards, I don't think nukes would be in play.
I could definitely see some people trying to find away to turn it to their advantage.

I agree with lots of that but I am not sure they could deny it's existence. Something that big would be impossible to deny. I do think many people would freak out though thinking it's not just a giant animal but a demon from Hell or even a alien from outer space. Some maybe even think it's from a alternate universe.

I suppose they could make it super-light or whatever, but then I doubt it could destroy buildings and cities...

I don't it's that hard to believe that people who haven't seen it in person to believe that the whole thing is some kind of hoax. If people can be convinced that a pandemic that is killing hundreds of thousands of people is a hoax, then I'm pretty sure they could be convinced anything is a hoax. Especially with something that is so far outside of our experience up to this point, I could see a lot having trouble accepting it.
I definitely agree that people will be questioning it's origins. I wouldn't be surprised if the hardcore religious people are convinced it's punishment from God for all of the stuff we've been doing.

There are people who said that the two planes which had hit the WTC didn't exists (holograms, false tv records etc)

Or that the moonlanding was filmed in a studio.

My neighbor believes that the governments are using the pandemic to make Europe and the world under a dictatorship.

I agree with all three of these points. We are living in a moment where people believe Qanon conspiracies and the current pandemic is such a hoax that tens of thousands of bikers will hold a rally in the face of it and people hold mass protests just because they won't wear a mask.

It is easily possible that people would not believe a monster exists and instead declare it some kind of government conspiracy or hoax--even to the point where a major coastal city could be destroyed and people would prefer to believe it was aliens even with the video footage of the monster.

Of course, if we are talking real life, I think the vast majority of people would believe it was some kind of cover up for something like a nuclear accident or plague outbreak. In real life, I would probably believe that over footage of a giant lizard.

How much one believes I think might also be tied into how long it's in public view. I mean would Godzilla show up once in awhile and disappear or would as I think that once you see him people would be tracking him and sort of keeping a eye on him 24 hours a day. Granted Godzilla once he goes underwater it might be hard to track him. This makes me wonder now just hard would it be for Godzilla to basically hide from humans. Where could he possible go where humans aren't already there.
