What do you think the real 2370's will be like?

Ok try to look into the future, will humans be exploring the Galaxy in this time period? I think we will still be struggling to get out of our solar system.

I'm going to quote David Byrne: "Same as it ever was." Just like the rest of recorded history has been.

People will still be very much the same while technology, culture, rituals and science will be weirder than anything we can imagine.

I think in the 2370s we'll have permanant settlements on Luna and Mars and there may be relatively large space stations in orbit of Jupiter and Saturn. There will be plans to establish similar bases on the outer planets.

Otherwise, not much else has changed on Earth since the early 21st-Century. The same kind of problems exist except that the names have changed.

The Android Act of 2379 will make it illegal for any corporation to produce (or for any citizen to own) an android that is totally physically indistinguishable from a Human...

In the 2370s there shall be peace and harmony. :)

Because the human race wiped itself out in 2078.

Hard to say. I don't think it will be neither the "Blade Runner" or "Star Trek" model. I think it would be closer to the "Firefly" model. A space program would be for colonization and resources.

Space exploration can't exist for its own sake. In the 1960s the prestige of a moon landing was enough to keep the space program going for about 10 years in the US.

In the last Millenium 1000-1999, technology didn't make any serious advances for 500+ years. The average Joe in the time of Ethelred the Unready lived at the same standard of living as the average Joe in Tudor England.

Advances are made because they have to be made or Necessity is the Mother...you know the rest.

The 3rd act of A.I.
The future scenes from the Terminator movies.
The Road Warrior, except the scraps we'll be fighting over will be higher tech,
the Matrix

I think at that time we will just be getting around to Space 1999 type ideas. Sorry to say but until the Earth gets its head screwed on straight there will not be enough time or money to spend on space matters. Space exploration cannot be handled on a nation by nation basis, it must be a global effort. Perhaps by then we will have worked things out but I am less than confident.

Some colonies and outposts could have been established throughout the solar system (most likely on Moon and Mars, perhaps also on some asteroids or Gas giants' moons). But no form of faster-than-light travel and no contact with aliens.

There won't necessarily be a world government. But I'm not so sure if nation-states in the form we understand it today will exist either. Something along the lines of the "Phyles" from Neal Stephenson's "Diamond Age" could be possible.

The big question: Will real artificial intelligence be developed and will something like the "singularity" actually occur?

The remains of "humanity", having been forced to abandon Earth in the mid-21st century due to eco changes beyond our ability to cope, will live in orbiting L5 colonies. Stratification of societal roles due to the necessary regimentation of life in a closed environment.

Indeed. If it doesn't, one can probably extrapolate very broad technological predictions if not specific trends about the future. You can't predict war and social and political upheaval, but I don't think people would change to much in the next couple hundred years even if our computers run faster and our media changes and nation states come and go.

Throw in the singularity and some man-machine merger at some level and the whole game is different. Unpredictable by nature, we are quite simply to stupid.

Of all the available resources and writings on this topic you sure picked a dry one. :)

My opinion?

Worst case.

1) Humans will have mastered antimatter production and propulsion and will have major bases circling every major planet in the solar system or on the surface.

2) Slower than light starships capable of up to 50% of the speed of light will have transported human expeditions to the closest dozen or so stars with planets.

3) Slower than light unmanned probes will have gone to hundreds of other stars.

4) On Earth, there will still be nations, alliances....and wars.

But physical conflicts will more and more be fought largely by machines in a more restricted and formalized form of combat.

As in "The U.S. and Pacific Rim Alliance decide to decide their conflict over genetic engineering rights by each sending their 100 best RPVs into battle with each other over the South Pacific."

A genetically engineered giant radioactive atomic fire breathing lizard will be created after a horrible accident it will then destroy several major cities around the world forcing the nations of the world to unit to fight it.

If we wipe ourselves out, by the 2370s intelligent beetles will begin taking over the Earth. If we're still around, we'll begin to be more like the Borg than we'd like to think. -- RR

near the end of his life, Arthur C Clarke wrote quite a few things that portray borgafication as not such a bad thing. If it were like the original borg, I could see that.
