What do you think about Chris Evans playing Cap?

issreliant

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
So Chris Evans of Fantastic Four fame, is cast as Captain America. do you think he can pull it off, or is this a huge mistep in marvels plan? Im on the fence, while i enjoyed him as the "Human torch", and in "The Losers". I do not think he has the chops to play Cap. I would much rather see him in the role for Hawkeye. That character would suit him better. so what do you think? yay or nae? also wo do you think would be a better Cap? for me i would have loved to see Jensen Ackles play Cap.

As long as there are lots of scenes where he's misplaced his shirt, it should be ok. :)

I want a scene where Evans' Captain America bumps into Evans' Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies.

^You'll just have to settle for Toro. :)

I like Evans, he's a good choice for the role. A lot better a choice than Jensen Ackles who I hated in Smallville.

i think this thread will get merged with the other one, but what the hey...

i think he could be good. i like him in F4.

He's a credible action hero, and very likeable. The x-factor is how commanding/serious he can be; I've heard he was really good in a straight dramatic part in Sunshine, though I haven't seen it. Overall, I like him for the part.

He was the best part of both FF movies. (Okay thats not saying much. ;) )

No, Jessica Alba is.

No, and this isn't a knock against Alba, but I just never really bought her as Sue. She seemed like stunt-casting that didn't quite work.

Evans and Chiklis on the other hand... nailed it! :techman:

As for Cap, I'm willing to give Evans a chance as I haven't seen anything to make me think he couldn't do it, and obviously the studio folk liked him.

The most common complaint I've heard about Evens (although not in this thread) is that he's "Too skinny".

For those with that opinion, I direct you to this article. Scroll down to the 2nd photo.

It isn't that he is skinny, though some may not be able to articulate it any other way, but rather he has a lean, lanky, swimmer/footballer(soccer) build much like Brandon Routh, Ryan Reynolds, etc. His face is also boyish and not at particularly like the square-jawed all-American Quarterback 1940s ideal he is so often drawn as(Some longer hair might help, but his face just doesn't read 'Captain America' IMO). These aren't criticisms, just observations.

I think Evans is a tremendous talent when he has a role that suits him and writing to back him up, but I don't think he looks anything like Captain America and he seems like a 'safe' choice after some of the more 'out-there', but potentially far better names we heard along the way. Won't hurt my enjoyment of the movie if it is otherwise good, and they could have done a lot worse, but he won't be replacing my image of cap either way.

As a fan of professional wrestling, I can say you don't want anyone too big. The problem with man mountain type guys is that they're slow and can't move easily which doesn't suit Cap at all.

Think Steve Reeves, Ed Fury, Brad Harris, etc. Dave Draper is probably the closest physically. Modern bodybuilders tend towards too large even for superheroic standards and wrestlers are generally very heavy in comparison. Obviously even back in the day body builders would rarely actually look -that- good all the time, and it is nearly impossible to get someone who isn't already inclined toward that shape into it within a few months, but I can be optimistic that someday they'll cast such a person as one of these 'peak of human physicality' superheroes.

It's not a 'WTF?' piece of casting like e.g. Michael Keaton as Batman. Nor is it a pitch-perfect piece of casting like Christopher Reeve as Superman or Patrick Stewart as Xavier. Or an unpredicted but inspired choice like Robert Downey jr as Iron Man or Heath Ledger as The Joker.

It's by no means a bad choice. He's a likeable and charismatic actor who will be able to carry off the action and be in the right shape for the role. He also has sufficient facial resemblance. I just think that casting a guy who's already played an iconic Marvel character shows little imagination and I've never seen him play such a straitlaced role before (though I know he got good reviews for Sunshine).

I think really an unknown should have played this role but if they had to go for a name actor, Evans is one of the best choices they could have gone for. A young Pitt or McConaughey would have been ideal but they're too old now. Also, Evans isn't quite so famous that you'll be sitting there thinking 'that's just Tom Cruise in a Spider-man suit' or 'Robert Redford in a Superman costume' (to name two examples of superhero casting there almost was).

^The problem with casting Matthew McConaughey is that Captain America, in most versions of the continuity, is male.

I'm absolutely ecstatic over Evans' casting. I think he's perfect for the role: He's young, attractive, well-built and (as Hermiod pointed out) doesn't have the overabundance of muscle that would limit his agility. Cap is the prototypical American soldier, so a quarterback, not a linebacker. I'm really pumped to see what he'll do.

Ouch! But to be fair, leave aside the asinine romcoms and watch him in the likes of Frailty, Edtv or U-571 and McConaughey can be a pretty decent and watchable actor.
