What do YOU do to promote Trek book?

So what do YOU do?

Nothing whatsoever, although that may change in the exceedingly unlikely event Simon & Schuster's marketing department ever starts paying me a (very handsome) salary to do their advertising dirty work.

TGT

Absolutely nothing. Kudos for going out of your way to do things like that, but I feel that spending LOTS of my money on the books and buying them new as they come out is all the support I should be required to give.

I don't know why but this kind of makes me sad to read how selfish your personal interest in Star Trek books is. I always am trying to find ways to help other Trek fans discover and get into the books. I guess it never occurred to me that other fans are only interested in their own enjoyment and could care less if others discover the joy of Trek books. I guess it's kind of like fans who feel they hold something so special that they don't want it to be too well known because if too many know their precious object of affection it becomes too common and not so special anymore? Some kind of secret club like the Illuminati?

Kevin

I don't think it is selfish at all. Like I said, I show my support for the books by buying them. I buy them new instead of used when possible to make sure that my purchase will reflect on the sales of the book and to help the authors. I come to these message boards and support the community here by contributing. But beyond that, I feel no responsibility or inclination to do anything else.

I put my favourites in one of those big slide things that slowly goes through them on my website. I discuss them on multiple forums and encourage people to read, at least what I can vouch for.

And I nag- people, especially Trek people, who haven't read a trek book, esp. DS9PF are missing out!!!

Voting with your wallet is perfectly acceptable.

i recommend, though there is sometimes resistance. I find myself saying, "They're not what you think" or "they're not like that anymore" while facing a lot of bemused shaking heads.

Those that listen to me become fans as a rule.

Those that don't?

Well, the world needs its morons.

IDIC
Yep.

Like others I buy the books. I'm also the mod of the books section of a German Trek board and in that function tried to get people into reading TrekLit in English, but with little to no success I fear. :(

One could argue that writing reviews and interviews for Unreality SF could count as promoting the books, but I'm not vain enough to think that this has an impact on sales one way or the other.

Although it would mentally scar many a person for life with seeing such an image tattooed on said arse cheek, it would have been funnier to have pictorial proof dear sir! :rommie:

Oh and to answer the OP, I buy the books and try and get people to read them as well but apart from my own group of friends the individuals who hang out on here, I don't actually know that many Trekkies.

I forgot, I did get a friend of mine into the books and since then he has bought EVERY new release over the last year and a half..so I guess that counts for something! I did it for purely selfish reasons though, to have someone to discuss them in real life with.

i buy them new as they come out. i also read them in public places like on the bus to work or the diner at lunch as if to say "see, reading star trek books really is cool."

the book stores i frequent already do a good job of placing the books so the covers of the new books are showing. the only thing i would be tempted to do would be to move the star trek books from the boom shelf to eye level because i'm tired of bending over to grab them but i think that's going over the line. plus i remember when i used to work in a record store and having to deal with "helpful" customers who would sometimes move things to where they thought it made more sense. someone would come in asking for something and it's not where we filed it and have to spend time hunting around for it. pretty damn annoying.

I've actually done some things to promote the books over the years, mostly on different forums.

I've often stated that I find most of the books as good as or even better than many of the TV episodes. There are some books I've recommended, like "The Black Shore" by Greg Cox which is my favorite among the Star Trek novels.

I've also stated that I regard the relaunch books as the continuing adventures of our favorites from the different series and that the books should be regarded as "canon" as well. I've also tried to include the books in different timelines for the series.

Thosw who happen to like the Voyager books from seasons 1-3 can read my reviews of them on: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Park/1964/bookreviews.html

Lot of positive reviews there.

The bookreviews are a part of my Kes Website and there is a Timeline (including the books) and some maps to be found as well.

I tend to force good books on anyone I think will be interested, but I only know one Star Trek fan outside my immediate family in real life, so I can't really do much.

...thinking about that for a second, I suppose that means the first logical step is to work on getting my friends hooked on Trek.

I don't do much, but whenever people ask me about the books at school or anything I will tell them all about them and how good they are, and I also regularly update the pages for the upcoming books on Memory Beta. I've to get my mom (who's the only other person I interact with regularly who has watched Trek) to get the books, but so far the only stuff she's ever read has been New Frontier. In fact she was the one who introduced me to the series once I was old enough to read them, and after reading them I decided to try DS9PF, and then Titan, and then A Time to and then.... and then.... So yeah you guys can pretty much thank her for me reading Trek Lit.

I talk enthusiastically about Relaunch whenever I come across a Trek fan IRL or online. Most have never read Trek books and my fervent praise for (in particular) DS9 Relaunch has them throwing themselves at Borders.. or not. At least they hear that there are excellent Trek novels, well worth the read.

At first thought, I thought "I don't do anything at all, why would I?" Then after reading this post, I didn't consider this. I do this as well. If I actually encounter a Star Trek fan, or a Sci-Fi book fan at all, I start going on and on about the Trek book line, and trying to convince them that they need to read them. I'm also rather cynical, in that I assume automatically that I will have to defend the *ahem* "honor" of the books because of what I perceive to be a general disdain for tie-in fiction. So I start in immediately about them not being "as bad as people make it out to be, and that they are quite good."

Nothing. I'll buy the occasional book so the only promotion they get is when I have friends visit and they see my bookshelf.
