What do you dislike about your home?

Thestrangequark, RoJoHen, you two are seriously making my eye twitch, discussing the incredibly disgusting environment in which you have been subjected.

Anyway, as for myself, what I don't like about our home is that we can't own it. Rent only.

J.

I live in an apartment upstairs of a tanning salon which blasts the same 10 pop songs in an endless track at extremely high volume from 7:45am to 10:30pm. If you don't have your TV playing you can make out every word... to read I have to crank my white noise machine at full volume. There's also a fire station across the tiny street outside my window which blares an air raid siren 3-5 times a day. Also, *something* wakes me up at 5:30am every morning, probably a garbage truck or delivery truck.

The one thing I hate about my house is the mortgage. :scream:

Well, that and the fact that it has three bedrooms, two double beds and a single bed, and only one occupant: me. :(

I don't like our basement. It's half full basement, and the rest is crawl space. We've had mice issues.

Also, the electric is wacky. The house was built in 1950, and has been renovated several times over the years. The house is great, shows real pride of ownership from previous occupants. Granite counters, new bathrooms, nice hardwood floors. But I have all these switches that either do nothing or the same thing!

Bought my flat 2 years ago to get out of the Parents house and now after that time I'm starting to regret buying it as it's 100 years old, very small (one bedroom, small bathroom and Kitchen), not a lot of storage space, mortgage that takes half my salary and stuck with the same decor from previous owner.

Cause I'm tied into the mortgage, and the way the housing market is, I'm afraid I'm going to be stuck with it for another couple years.

Starting to wish I had rented as when I was on the council list I did get offered a couple of okay flats in reasonably good locations, and the rent would've been half my mortgage.

Well, I liked our house when we first moved here but now the dining area looks like a mushroom playground. Seriously! It's starting to get all moldy and nasty..but money is tight these days and we would have to replace the whole carpet in the house in order to do it. It might be the reason why I always feel sick or like I'm coming down with something.

I quite like my house and I plan to live here for several more years.

However I have a few minor complaints.

1) The kitchen, which is rather small, doesn't have enough bench/counter space.

2) The house is placed sideways on the block. I don't mind this in itself. However both my 'front' and 'back' doors are on the side of the house and the front door cannot be seen from the street. so nearly everyone just walks down driveway and knocks on my backdoor. I do plan to put in a more obvious pathway to my front door when I am able to.

My grandma's house is the same way! We always use her "back door" to enter the house because it's right next to the driveway. It even looks like a front door. However, her real front door is on the other side near her mailbox.

I don't like the fact that I still have so much work left to do!

But it'll be awesome (and I'll be broke) when it's done

I bought a 2-bedroom, ground-floor condo two and a half years ago. It was a bit of a fixer-upper and had been previously used as rental property. I had the place completely re-painted. Replaced the windows and sliding glass door. Forced the seller to pay for most of a new HVAC unit. Gutted the kitchen and had a new one put in.

I should be happy with it. I would be, if it weren't for a few issues that have popped up. I have been very unfortunate with water. I had a water leak originating from the upstairs neighbor. His bathroom was above my kitchen, and some water eventually came in. Took him two weeks to acknowledge the problem as his, and to get it fixed. I also had some water come in from an exterior wall, as the result of some building construction. So if it rained hard enough, water came in and built up on my window ledge. Finally, last winter, when it was freezing cold, a pipe burst above my bedroom ceiling. I had a large hole in my bedroom for nearly two weeks.

I am now terrified of all things water. Since I have people living above me, I hear the pipes. The sound puts me on edge every single time. The main cut-off valve for me and the neighbors above me is also in my unit (in the closet with the HVAC). It hisses when someone's using water. That noise also now drives me crazy.

I will never live below someone ever again. I would be much happier in a townhouse or single family home, because at least I wouldn't have to worry about someone else's problems interfering with me. Unfortunately, the housing market still sucks and I wouldn't be able to sell my place for much more than what I paid for it (and given the upgrades I've done, I'd actually lose a little more). I'm also single so I am limited to what I can afford on one income. Real estate in a nice neighborhood is very expensive here.

We have been here for just over 6 years now. I do love my house, but there are just a couple things I want to change/ replace, but have to wait until there is a bit more disposable cash for that

1. both showers have standard white tiles, and I would love to get an upgrade

2. definitely need new flooring in the bedrooms. The carpet is low grade crap, and steam cleaning it only goes so far( we had planned on replacing it, but finances started to get tight a while ago).

And yes, if I thought long and hard enough, I am sure I could come up with other things, but those are the main two.

I currently live with a couple of socially incompetent, hygienically challenged, middle aged gentlemen who are so set in their ways that my attempts at cleaning have actually been challenged by them on multiple occasions. "It was fine the way it was", "I don't like the smell of that stuff" and "I'm allergic to everything, just use water."(which is bullshit, since the cleaning products were in the house before I got there and he never has a reaction when I use them) are fairly common when I am holding my nose and trying not to throw up while scrubbing away their years-old filth. I refuse to cook in their kitchen because of 1. The smell and 2. there is no room, and have to wear shoes to the bathroom unless I have mopped it very recently. Their entire floor gathers a grayish-brown film after a few days from a combination of dust from the nearby freeway and their unwiped shoes. At least one of them is a trash hoarder and I keep finding drawers and cabinets filled with half-drank soda bottles, used disposable razors, etc.

So, yeah, just about everything.

I dislike my shower, as it is way too small. And I dislike my lack of privacy since I took in my young adult nephew two weeks ago to keep him from living on the streets.

I think we all have little things in our homes that we would prefer were different. Maybe you hate your stove, or you don't like the kitchen floor, or your bathroom is too small.

I hate that the fan in my bathroom turns on automatically when I turn on the lights. It's just unnecessary. I don't need a fan on when I'm brushing my teeth or shaving, but it's on nonetheless.

I also dislike my blinds. They're the long vertical blinds (which is fine), but they only slide open from the right-hand side of the window. I wish they slid from both sides.

Unfortunately, I'm just renting this apartment, so there's not a whole lot I can do.
I really like the house I'm now living in but for one thing. When the house was new there were trees out back so that when you sat in the sun room (formerly an outdoor deck) it look like wild bush in the back and like you were more in the country. Now as of about two years ago they've built another home near the properly line on that back lot and the nice view and atmosphere is gone. Good thing the new back neighbours are clean and maintain their property nicely.

All this talk of filth... is making my skin crawl. And tsq I am a guy and I would rather be set on fire than not clean. The bathroom gets scrubbed once a week. The bathtub gets a deep clean once a month. The clear plastic shower curtain liner gets tossed for a new one every six months, not because of mildew. I don't like the cloudy hard water rings it gets on it. And I don't just brush the bowl. My toilet gets bleached from stem to stern every week. That includes the hinges, seats, lids, tank and base. And my kitchen is so totally scrubbed that you could do major surgery in it. I also dust, vacuum and clear once a week too. When it comes to having a clean, fresh, organized, trash free place, I am on it. :bolian:

And I love my apartment. It has a fireplace, hardwood floors and a decent size kitchen. My only complaint would be having enough space. Right now I have every single closet crammed full. It has gotten so bad that I have started reorganizing, sorting, throwing out things every two months just to keep from being overwhelmed. And I have a six month rule (except for Holiday decorations or costumes). If I don't use it in six months it gets tossed or donated. I also wouldn't mind having a second bedroom to use as a studio/office. Right now I have taken over the dining room to work in. I keep it neat and clean but I hate having the computer set up in there.

I don't like that my home is not my own. I have an intrusive landlord who ignores the laws about giving notice before entering. Quoting the fair housing law and threats of lawsuits on the recommendation of the housing boards have not been effective in getting him to even acknowledge that he is in the wrong or he should stop. I feel like I have no privacy or safety in my own apartment.

I like most things about my house, but there are a few things I wish were different:

I wish the laundry room was wide enough for the washer and dryer to be side-by-side instead of stacked. I mean, it's at the back door, all they had to do was increase the room's dimension 3 feet.

I wish the garage were just a bit wider. We can fit both cars, but it's close.

I wish the kitchen and bathroom floors were ceramic tile instead of industrial. We plan to replace it sometime, but it's worrisome to not know what's under the industrial tile. We do know that there's plywood there, but not sure how the plywood is attached--straight to the hardwood floor or what?

Overall, not bad. Good layout. We've been changing the windows to good Pella brands, with the blinds in between? 17 windows down, 6 to go. Yeah, 23 windows: 12 are 3' x 5', 4 are 3' x 4', and 7 are 3' x 3'.
