What do kids think about TOS remastered?

I have shamefully not yet purchased ST on DVD at all yet. Mostly because each set is at least 3X as expensive as any other TV box set, and also because just when I make up my mind to get it they release a new version with a confounding set of options and extras.

I know the Season 1 remastered version is in HD on side A. Since that format is no longer existent have they reprinted Season 1 so that side A is a standard DVD? Am I correct in assuming that Seasons 2 & 3 are in standard format on both sides of the disc? And if Season 1 is indeed reprinted in standard does it indicate so on the case?

I know this is sounding like a quiz but is that remaster/original toggle option in the Blu-ray really exclusive to that format's capabilities? I have concert standard DVDs that let you seemlessly choose which angle to view the show. That's pretty much the same thing isn't it? I assume it would take a lot of disc space.

My 13 year old son has seen all of DS9, VOY and ENT and 2 seasons of TNG. We have now been watching TOS and are on the third season.

The other night when the away team had beamed down to some planet with grasses spray painted blue and odd styrofoam rocks the kid says to me, "TOS is better than DS9 and the other Treks because they just have outdoor scenes on earth. In TOS they try and make the planet look alien by changing the colors and stuff."

!!!

This was so cool! Rather than laughing his ass off over the "special" effects which I have seen other kids do.

Those are the first box sets of the remastered and enhanced episodes in the bulky plastic boxes. The first season was HD-DVD on one side and DVD on the other; seasons 2 and 3 were DVD on one side and blank on the other. All three seasons feature only the enhanced episodes (new effects). They haven't re-released season 1 with a blank side as there'd be little point. They aren't making any more of these versions now anyway.

The new DVD box sets are in new slim packaging. Again, they only contain the enhanced episodes (new effects). They're DVD only, with proper disc art, not double-sided.

It's pretty much the same, yes. I would assume there were space constraints that prevented the option from appearing on the DVD sets. Either that or they wanted to add extra incentive to buy the Blu-ray versions.

Thank you. That was helpful. :)

I thought those HD boxes contained both original and new effects, each on one side. I don't think I've ever seen them in the slim case.

So to see it both ways I would have to upgrade to blu-ray? Not on an $11.75 an hour salary, alas.

I'll wait for the inevitable next standard release, whatever that will be.

They're one sided discs. You simply choose on the main menu whether to watch the episode with original FX or new FX, and during the episode you can switch back and forth by pushing the "angle" button on your remote.

As for the starfield, I prefer the original to TNG's "streaky stars."
