And it wasn't just the beaming from Delta Vega - although that was the worst offender. Later in the film they beam from the Enterprise on the far side of Titan to the Narada which is in orbit around Earth. .

I went to see the film 6 times in different cities, and that scene made people laugh every time- not because they thought it was stupid, but because they found it funny. I was relieved, too.
Well -- this is just my "fanon speculation", but perhaps our solar system could have an infrastructure set up that allows beaming over distance within the solar system -- such as a series of "repeater/amplifier" stations (it is our "home neighborhood", after all). This infrastructure may exist within the solar system, but would be impractical in deep space.
Using my "fanon speculation" is a well-honed skill that often was required when trying to explain Star Trek inconsistencies in the past.
If I wanted to get nitpicky, there's TONS of stuff that was just wacky. On first viewing, the "Red Matter" for instance, and the fact that this stuff is supposed to create Black Holes. Yeah, ok 
And while I had no problem with the size of Nero's ship (it's a mining ship that I assume mines planets) I thought the interior corridors were silly (reminded me of Nemesis, but Nemesis was way worse in that it had those corridors inside the Enterprise. At least here they are inside an alien ship).
A bunch of other minor stuff too. However the movie was so fun and uplifting that pretty much all my nitpicks can be forgiven. I had a blast watching it and that was the most important thing. Second, they payed great homage to the characters without imitating them.

It was TOO LINEAR. I must admit I wanted something a bit like LOST and Batman Begins, with flashbacks to highlight each character and where they came from.
Other then that and Anton Yelchin's accent no problems. Oh and it was too short.

Hey, I'm not against rationalizations, but it's still an enormous stretch (pardon the pun).
that makes sense plus the technology might have changed due to whatever they were able to learn about the scans of the narada.
as for spock uhura..
orci has even said he dected something between them in some of the early episodes.
just check out charlie x.
and i bought the idea of spock being unobtainable until i saw journey to babel.
the obvious warmth apparent between amanda and sarek just threw out the notion that it wouldnt work between spock and a human woman.
though i wouldnt be suprised if duty causes a break up between the two between now and the next movie.
and i dont think that uhura would have reached out to him the way she did except for the situaiton spock found himself in.
he was about to lose it when he left the bridge to go into the turbolift just after making the log entry.
now i do wish we had more background about kirk did at the academy and what other ships he had served on.
it would have been nice to have a kirk and bones scene on the way to earth
about how after thinking out bones tells him why kirk being there in command is a good thing.
Finally, a place to express myself. I have been a Trek fan since the beginning, and I mean the beginning. I remember getting excited about TOS in the summer of 1966 when I saw the previews of the upcoming fall TV season. I watched the first episode on NBC and don't think I missed any of them that first season and not too many in the next two years. I have been in love with the original crew from the start. I have watched all of the movies and, overall, really enjoyed the current film.
But I want to borrow a phrase that came out of the events of a certain favorite episode of TOS and say "Uhura must die!" (or at least get dumped by Spock). Sorry, Uhura, love you in the TOS series and movie, but don't mess around with Spock and hamper the development of the friendship and deep bond between Kirk and Spock. To refer once again to "City of the Edge of Forever", Edith Keeler had it right, and Spock won't be at Kirk's side like he'd always been there and always will if he's got a happy love life or wife and kids. Isn't going to happen! So writers of the next ST movie sequel - Fix that! Geesh, do I have to go out to California and smack some heads together??? I can tolerate many of the "re-boots" since the characters in the new movie are overall so true to the originals, but don't screw up what made TOS and subsequent movies so enjoyable, even the not so good ones. Is Uhura going to steal the Enterprise and go back to the Genesis Planet to save Spock?

I can't believe I'm going to have to bring this up in this thread, but "Uhura must die," is just eerily reminiscent of the SAME exact things that were said about the TOS character, even though she was WOEFULLY underwritten, the only bridge officer without a full name for 79 episodes 10 movies over the course of 43 years.
We can also bring up the fact that like all the other females on the show that had speaking line Nichelle had to go through hell, plus the indignity of not actually being contracted by the show, Paramount, or NBC because the suits did everything they could to make her walk, and she nearly did. A certain cicil rights leader changed her mind. Plus Rodenberry paid her out of his own pocket cause no one else would. Read Nichole's book.
You were never a fan of the originial series if you can not get over the fact that the starship Enterprise was run by an entire CREW of people. And you sure as hell were NEVER a fan of the TOS Uhura if you want her to die like many other malicious cruel borderline dangerous people did back in the day. The NuUhura has done nothing that warrents a character death yet, execpt perhaps become involved with a man who returns her feelings equally. Trek has only had one other on screen fuctioning romance and that was with B'Lanna and Tom in VOY, nothing else has worked out long term. NOTHING!
As I said before, now 43 gd years later, Uhura is finally being given her due of development, which by the way is THROUGH another character (Spock) not even her own storyline, and can't see beyond your idealistic bromance which by the way was not hampered at all.
The Romance enhanced the film, it in no way took anything away. There was levity because of it, Kirk got his ego handed to him (which needed to happen 4 decaded ago), the geek got the girl (which hasn't happened since Revenge of the Nerds), and the Bromance still happened.
I don't know how old you are, but serioulsy grow up about the Bromance already, the third act of the film was 90% Kirk/Spock old school action. Everyone got what they had coming. Including those who waited 40+ years to hear a name, and we actual fans were more than satisfied when it was said by a loved one.
Which I see you did not mention her FIRST (never mentioned at all before) name at all, but you want her dead.
I can see through you and you know what, there's nothing there. No heart, no soul, nadda. Just a mouth full of whine.
All little things aside, the only two things I didn't particularly care for was the Spock/Uhura romance and Nero being a little on the "Meh" side for the most part.
Granted, they have at least two more movies to explore the relationship between Spock and Uhura. But here, it just felt needlessly tacked on. No offense to anyone who liked the whole thing. I just didn't. Sorry. I'm not against Spock getting the girl, and I'm not against giving Uhura something substantial to do. I just didn't like how it played out.
Also, I suppose I'd have to agree with an earlier sentiment that there wasn't enough Spock/McCoy, but I'm considering that a minor complaint.

I loved the movie and really didn't have any complaints.
In fact, if I didn't have to read this forum, I'd be living in absolute bliss, in full assurance that we FINALLY have a Star Trek movie that is in the same league as TWOK.
Took a few decades...but we finally have another genuinely kick-ass GREAT movie.

Oh, I wouldn't say that at all. Kira/Odo was way better than Tom/B'ellana. Actually even Picard/Crusher or Dax/Worf weren't that bad. Of course, if by worked out long term you meant ending happily, i guess you're right.
