Why would Kirk want to get back with Marcus? He'd already banged her and moved on.

One of the novels said they got back together. Probably came from that.

Or likely because Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flinn originally planned to show that she & Kirk had reconciled in an early scene in Star Trek VI.
