Hypothetically Equinox was taken by Caretaker 6 months before Voyager was, yet a fully qualified Starfleet Captain didn't make a dent in that giant cluster#### before Voyager came on the scene.

What the frakk happened?

Well, Rudy would have tried to get the Caretaker to send them back, and I'm not sure why the Caretaker didn't.

Looking over the list of episodes before Equinox, two truly questionable omissions are the Vidiians and the Devore. Most of the other events were one-off occurrences, and we can assume Equinox had its share of those simply by taking a slightly different route. You had shipboard events (Tuvix, Real Life), singular mission events (Time and Again, Rise), anomalous events (Cathexis, Non Sequitur) and interspecies events (Basics, Deathwish). But it is very likely Equinox would have encountered the Vidiians (albeit without the Klingon bait aboard) and the Devore (who would have commandeered Equinox due to the presence of any telepaths).

Funny, looking at the Equinox crew manifest - it seems the crew consisted entirely of humans. Anyone ever notice that?

Starships need planets and other resources to keep running.

Voyager could travel longer for faster between pit stops. Voyager could ignore Pitstops that Equinox couldn't. Because Equinox had to stop at plant x, y and z that Voyager didn't have to bother with, Equinox's overall journey home (relative to Voyagers) might be 30 degrees off, or 9 night light years left of Voyager and a fraction more askew every day.

They would have completely different routes home.

The Caretaker heard the name "Rudy Ransom" and thought, what a ridiculous cartoon name... you're not the alter ego of a fucking superhero, mate.

Then in a fit of anger, he pushed them a few thousand light years back in the direction of the Alpha quadrant. He was so sickened by the stupidity of his name.

I always wished they'd ended the Equinox episode with this song

These episodes were never to be taken too seriously, they were just cool ideas but not with much substance to it to end a season and begin another with no continuation to it.
