What did Kruge's dog die of?

Boom, the Bird of Prey was torpedoed. So what? Nobody else got hurt. There was some shaking, the ship did a 360 deg turn -- and that was all. No hole in the hull for air to escape or radiation come it.

But the dog died. Perhaps he bumped his head too hard on Kruge's throne?

Electrocuted - the torpedo hit apparently caused a power overload. There were sparks near Kruge's chair and his "pet" shivered like he was being zapped...

cut scene:
"Klingon bastard, you killed my son!"
"and you killed my dog!"

(it's hard to joke about this scene. I strongly disagree with anybody that say Shatner isn't a great actor)

It's not a Targ. The targ was invented afterwards and looks nothing like this animal, nor it has any reason to.

When the Enterprise hit the BoP with the torpedo, the explosion popped open the compartment in Kruge's command chair where he kept his Klingon chocolate bars. The dog ate a BaBy R'u-th and suddenly keeled over dead.

The dog died from the sheer heat and destruction that made itself into the bridge from those torpedoes. The reason why Kruge and his crew survived is because they were that hard, and it was 1980's after all.

Klingons, armored. Puppy, not so much. I'm down with electrocution; more than likely the average Klingon boot is insulated against such things, at least as much as the average modern work boot of today.

Looking at the script though, the means the targ met his maker (do all targs go to Sto'vo'kor?) was not specified. Just dead. Probably Nimoy made some decisions between final draft and shooting day to visualize this event.

So?

By this logic, pugs aren't dogs because they don't look like German Shepherds.

The animal in III doesn't look like a targ, doesn't walk like a targ, doesn't quack like a targ. The only thing it has in common with a targ is that both appeared in Star Trek, and one of them only from TNG on.

If Kirk found it in the ship after the movie he probably barbecued it since there is no meat to eat in Vulcan.

Now, pugs? what pugs? and you talk about my logic?

We had this debate on the TrekBBS a few years ago. The animal featured in ST III was a Klingon canine with reptilian qualities. The production crew called it Fifi Rebozo. The novelization called it Warrigal (ie. after the Australian dingo, a native dog).

When they had a child playing one in the Universal Studios "A Star Trek Adventure", they credited it as a "puppy lizard".

The script of ST VI described those white doglike creatures on Rura Penthe as "jackal mastifs".

The first targ featured in Trek was in early TNG, when a real boar was dressed up in latex appliance spikes.
