So here I'm not talking about films that were a bit shit, or that were never your sort of thing but that you sat through to humour your partner; but rather films that you quite enjoyed as you were watching them but, ultimately, left you at something of a loose end. In other words, films that seemed somehow less than the sum of their parts. Here are two films I've seen recently which fall into this category for me:
The Kids Are All Right (2010 - USA)
I felt like I just spent two hours spying on a family through the kitchen window. It's a delightful family to be sure, and their activities are engaging enough, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to get out of it in the end beyond 'see, lesbians are people (and parents!) too!'
Home (2008 - France)
Another delightful and slightly unconventional family is featured here, they live in a house next to an abandoned highway in the middle of nowhere. The highway soon becomes un-abandoned and very, very noisy, leading the family to increasingly seek to isolate themselves and the house from the outside world. I'm not sure if the film thinks it's more profound than it actually is or if I'm actually thicker than I generally assume.
