What Countries Have You Visited & How Would You Describe Them? redux

Speaking of Amtrak, can anyone recommend a good train trip in Canada or the West Coast of the U.S.? I've always wanted to travel by train (and while I live in the SF Bay Area, BART doesn't count).

I've never done it, so I can't actually give you a review or anything, but if money was no object, I would totally want to do one of these. It sounds incredible.

But be warned, it's expensive. Like CRAZY expensive.

Thanks. That's the commercial I've seen on TV! The prices are comparable to, say, a seven-night Alaskan or Caribbean cruise. I want to try a cruise ship first, then probably hop on board a train.

Yeah, so much so that the joke is that it's out of reach of a majority of Canadians. ;)

There was a documentary miniseries on PBS, I want to say 15-20 years ago, I think? It was from around the time train service was reduced and showed coast-to-coast travel via The Canadian. Looking it up on Youtube, it was called Last Train Across Canada, and was from 1990. This refers to The Canadian that ran on a now discontinued route, and this current version of the train now runs on a Northern CN Line that apparently the Super Continental used to use before it ceased. And keep in mind that, at the time that documentary was made, there was a lot of uncertainty up in the air. VIA had announced reduced service and The Canadian would be ending, and there was no indication it'd ever come back. I think it was only much later that it was decided to bring it back in a modified manner.

Switzerland : lovely and was enchanted by their architecture.
Canada: friendly. Would like to go back, not as a pass through, but really experience it.
Mexico: artisans. Loved their food and crafts. Very vague memories, I was only 12.
Italy. Only saw northern most part so it basically looked like Swiz.
