What compelled you to finally get DVD? LOTR?

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - The Director's Cut

I was readin' an article about the new cut of the movie, the "updated" effects that, unlike certain other updates, was done as they would have been done back in the '70s, and the bonus features, especially the Phase II stuff, and decided that on my way home from work, I'd stop off at Wal-Mart. If they had TMP on DVD, I'd get it and a player to watch it on.

And they did, so I did.

Since that was the ONLY way to get the Directors Cut, I took the plunge. Paid ~$100 for the player.

For me, Blu Ray /HD would be nice BUT you have to have both the player AND the TV to enjoy it. I have neither. Plus the discs are 50% higher in cost.

Ya know, I don't even remember how much I paid for my first DVD player...probably $150 to $200. The DVD may have been about $20 or so.

As far as upgradin' to Blu Ray, I'm not in a rush. Like other folks here, its not just an upgrade to the format, its a new player and a new television, and possibly gettin' speakers added, too. So, my stuff is workin' without a problem, no need to upgrade 'til DVDs go the way of VHS.

I finally bought a DVD player about a year or so after DVD's started outselling VHS Tapes.

Now my trusty old DVD player is broken and I have to watch DVD's on my old PS2, which really sucks since I now have lost the 5.1 surround sound that the DVD player gave me. So I'll most likely be buying a bluray player soon. If my DVD player hadn't died (the spindle motor actually died) I would have most likely waited until the Star Wars movies came out in bluray.

Mine was a Christmas Gift in 1999.

Same. Or somewhere thereabouts.

My first DVD player was too advanced for my television, and I shopped around looking at stereo tuners, etc. and finally got a compatible tv about a year later.

After that, I began compiling a list of movies and narrowing it down to a top ten. I didn't really see why I'd buy more films than that. Now, I don't even go to rental stores, and I have a huge library.

A bloody shame that the Blu-Ray version of TMP is the theatrical cut. :(

I mean, I know *why* it is so - the new effects were, for some reason I'm not aware of, only rendered at standard def resolution. They'd have to be re-rendered (note: NOT re-created) for HD.

It still pisses me off, though. I hate TMP's theatrical cut and love the DE. If it wasn't for this, I'd have bought the Trek movie Blu-Ray collection already.
