What Changes Would You Like To See In "The Galileo Seven"?

Do we have links to screencaps of the original ep? I'd like to see how these things were handled the first time around.

Add me to the list of people who thought the effects were decent.

Well, they didn't fix the matted-in fog or the freon guages. Too bad. But it was the Galileo we saw taking off in that screen cap, not the Columbus. So where was the Columbus? (Hint: behind the wall. It's there. Trust me). I though the shuttlecraft burning up in the atmosphere wasn't very well done. I did like the fuel-jettison scene, as well as the green haze surrounding the planet.

And I don't know if it was the regular syndication cuts or some creative editing, but it seemed like we saw a lot less of the 12-foot-tall furry guys.

Here are the side-by-side shots, courtesy of trekmovie.com.

When the shuttle's remaining fuel is jettisoned and ignited, the resulting streaks and plumes look absolutely incredible. A thousand times better than the original 1967 optic overlays, which even then were kinda "meh."

^ Trek Movie is hosting it. It's on the same page as my link a couple of posts upthread.

Nothing was done to change the ape creatures on the planet's surface, but I guess it would have taken too long and cost more money than Mike Okuda had to CGI some new primates into the few shots where they appear.

They have said time and time again that they WILL NOT be doing much to any of the live action footage or effects; and if they DO a live action touch up, the effect either has to be really bad, or be something easy, and doable within tight time constraints.

Hence in Galileo Seven we still have the original phaser beam effects; the 'fog' matte covering the speared body as Guitano fires his phaser; and he 'Ape Men'; which WAS NOT an effect per se - just costuming of a tall extra.

Hell, they didn't fix the external planet shots where you see the shuttlecraft with its viewports closed; but when they cut to the inside; the viewports are open and you can see the set backdrop outside.

Also, since the viewport covers are extra protection; I find it wierd thatb the Remastered-SFX crew decided to show the foreward viewports as open during the shuttlecraft re-entry scene.

Of course there's the OTHER problems with the episode in that fopr EVERYTHING Spock does because he knows the 1701 is searching visually - he never:

Orders one or more phasers to be fired upwards into the sky (Hell, they mentioned Laser-Beacons in The Squire of Gothos which a ship/shittle could see from orbit); NOR does he try to set any sort of signal fire use the equipment they are throwing away to reduce takeoff weight(as ther was not much that looked flameable where they landed).

But hey - wouldn't make for much of a story if they were found in the first 15 minutes, would it. ;)

Re: What Changes Would You Like To See In "The Galileo Seven

One thing they SHOULD have fixed was the shot where Spock fires at the creature and it throws its animal-skin shield down at the ground in response. When it first hits the floor of the set, the prop shield is about the size of your average Roman/Greek-era movie prop shield...but when the shot changes the thing is now bigger than any of the Enterprise/Galileo officers! I know that was intended to convey just how enormous the ape creature were supposed to be in relation to our heroes...but the footprints in the soil and later the size of the creature that kills Gaetano don't match up or make sense. Oh well.

A Cool add on would be a special effects re do so we ca nsee breifly the deck below the main hangar deck of the Enterprise. Seeing the Shuttlecraft Columbus and Shuttlecraft Magellan bot hbeing moved to the elevator to be moved to the Flight deck would be cool. Seeing each shuttlecraft being launched and in flight would make sense. They should have as much fun as possible with it !

Wasn't there a continuity error in the new effects on the hangar deck? When the Galileo launches, you can see the Columbus sitting(slightly elevated)in the rear of the hangar...but when we get the external shot of the shuttle leaving the Enterprise we can no longer see the Columbus behind it in the spot where it was sitting a moment before.

Is it me or does the Maurasaki 312 now seem smaller with the addition of the planet? Before, when it was just green tinted cigar smoke, there were no planets to be seen from that distance, so it came across as huge.

Also, a plot point I never got. If it only take 3 days to get to Makus, they will be back in the area in 8. Wouldn't be smarter for Kirk to do his assignment, drop off that ass Ferris and then go back and study the quasar to his heart's content? Having "standing orders to investigate quasars" is pretty lame.

What would I like to see?

Spock smacking down the bridge crew for laughing at the others dying.

Oh, bite me.

If someone else has already mentioned it ad nauseam, sorry I brought it up again. If I was the first, just be glad I'm an observant and focused viewer. :D

"Hey...stop mentioning continuity errors! You don't know where that effect has BEEN!"

(*Washes off DVD in sink*)
