What box office takings for this to be deemed a success by Paramount?

The general consensus seems to be by those on here and reviews that the film is somewhere between very good and excellent.

But what sort of takings will be required for Paramount to deem it a success and therefore commision say another 3 or 4 films?

And how much takings would they need to be taking to commision a new TV series at some time?

Oh come on someone must have an idea, I don't want to be waiting another 5 years for some new Trek!

What did Wolverine gross? I hear they've decided to do more X-men: Origins...

200 million domestic and promising foreign box office (that is, significantly better than previous Trek films) and they'll be very happy. Anywhere north of that, and Abrams owns Paramount Pictures.

I don't know what Paramount is expecting... but Batman Begins got a sequel with a $48million opening weekend, $205million domestic, and $372million total worldwide gross. Granted, that was a few years ago.

I think Trek should be able to match that.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know when we'll know about "midnight showings"? I know most of them are at 7 instead, but Wolverine pulled in about $4.5M and it'd be a good (very) early benchmark.

Though we rarely agree. Dennis probably right.

Though I do think that 250 million plus would probably have to be the threshhold for Abrams to "own Paramount".

He already kind of does. He's got a deal that's worth freaking millions and includes final cut on all his films. I can't remember how many millions exactly, but he's not gonna starve, let's put it that way.

How much for a another trek film?

I would say 170M domestic, 300-350 world wide.

dvd sales/merchandise is just gravy

Re: What box office takings for this to be deemed a success by Paramou

Under today's business model, a worldwide gross of around 2.5X production budget generally makes a fast-tracked sequel an easy, no-brainer decision for the studio. So if a film with a production budget of $150 million grosses $375 million worldwide then it meets that threshold and a speedy sequel should follow. If the return is less than 2.5X the production budget, a sequel could still happen, especially if home entertainment revenue is especially strong, but obviously the lower the return the dicier the chances for a sequel becomes.

You said Batman Begins got a sequal with a $48 million opening weekend, are you sure about that? because the dark knight (the sequal to Begins) made over $100 million in it's opening weekend!.

Yes BB had a moderate opening but WoM was huge.

BB cost $150 million with a similar if not bigger ad budget and would of been considered a success if it had made only 350 if not a little less. Also DVD sales very good I expect TREK DVD to be best selling of the year in USA and top 5 in other places like UK, Canada, Germany etc.

Re: What box office takings for this to be deemed a success by Paramou

The cast did sign up for two more installments, not that it means much.

I wouldn't worry about a sequel. Its likely going to hit 150m-200m domestic, and a lot more internationally when you factor in DVD sales, its a no brainer really. Think comparing it to Batman Begins is a good shout, bit unfair with Dark Knight since they massively marketed it due to Ledger.
