Spoilers What are your unpopular Sci-Fi & Fantasy Opinions?

Also re: Logan, the "Surprise! That character babbling away in a language our hero doesn't understand could actually speak English all along!" twist is about as hacky and overdone as twists get.

---------------

Maybe if that cranky old coot had bothered to get an education, and a better-paying job than handing out balloons at the zoo all his life, he could have helped his wife afford the travel she so dearly wanted. Also, with said financial security, they could have adopted foster children if they wanted a family so badly.

So, no, I don't tear up in the slightest during that montage. :p

Seven & Ace are the best Doctor Who team

I don't know that they're the best but they're definitely in my top 5 or 6.

The Daleks are overrated, one dimensional and boring

I'm not even sure how unpopular this is. Outside of casual fans & the BBC merchandising department, I think most Whovians are completely sick of the Daleks. Back in the classic era, you could often go 3-5 years without seeing the Daleks. Now, they trot them out for at least a cameo every damn year!

Ghosbusters is a perfectly fine 80s comedy but has no business being a franchise

I almost agree with this except for the fact that I really loved The Real Ghostbusters when I was a kid. But as a movie franchise, it's mixed at best. The 2016 reboot was kinda cute but couldn't possibly withstand 27 years of hype. I'm cautiously pessimistic about the upcoming movie. And while I really enjoy Ghostbusters 2, I will freely admit that it doesn't NEED to exist. It does what it needs to by cashing in on my residual fondness for the first movie. But if I lived in a universe where it was never made, I think that I would be just as happy. (Perhaps even happier because then I wouldn't have been subjected to decades of speculation about making a sequel because no one would be expecting it to be a franchise at this point.)

The Deadpool movies aren't funny. I got maybe half a dozen laughs out of the 2 of them combined.

My take, Dollhouse is a good show hampered by a weak actor as the lead. Dichen Lachman should have been the lead.

Interesting. One of the reasons I wanted to see Dollhouse was because I liked Dushku as Faith in Buffy and Angel. Maybe she was better as supporting and maybe that should have been the case on Dollhouse. I was happy to see Lachman on Agents of Shield.

As for Ghostbusters, one of my earliest childhood memories was watching the Ghostbusters animated series in the early 90s. I later found out from the movies that Slimer wasn't actually a main character like he was in the series.

I was just going to say that. I love the stuff with him getting tortured by the North Koreans and the sword fight. It isn't until they get to the ice hotel that the whole thing starts to fall apart.

I would like to agree with this as I did enjoy the first part of the film--but after three tries I have never managed to stay awake to see the end. I always fell asleep during the Ice Hotel and the first time I saw it was in the theatre.

General Chang was the best villain in the Star Trek movies series.

TUC is my favorite movie, so I'm biased, but General Chang was an amazing villain. The problem I have with someone like Khan is he was a narssesist let his personal thirst for revenge consume him. He had the Genesis weapon, and even that wasn't good enough. General Chang felt like an equal to Kirk from his battle strategy to his feelings on the whole Khitomar thing. Also, Plummer played him really really well.

Never saw Buffy or Angel. Dollhouse was my first real exposure to Dushku. Echo was supposed to be a "chameleon". Dushku just didn't have the skill or range to pull it off.

-The Shining (both the book & movie) is very light on story

-Ghosbusters is a perfectly fine 80s comedy but has no business being a franchise

-Enterprise is pretty good

I agree with all three points and The Shining is still my favorite novel. It is light on story, but in addition to being a great horror/scare story it is primarily a character study and a study on the effects alcoholism has on a person's psyche and family. That realism gives it a depth that few other King novels have.

I noticed some comments about Doctor Who so I have one that might be unpopular:

Martha was a perfectly capable companion and I enjoyed her story arc. I remember when Season 3 aired and people seemed to not like Martha because she wasn't Rose. It seemed like Martha was the only one who ended up leaving on her own accord, because she didn't want the life of traveling with the Doctor. All the other companions had tragedy to their characters which forced them to leave. (I don't know about the current set of companions because I stopped watching the series after season 11).

I love Martha.

Asimov's foundation is basically unreadable and full of cringe.

The philosophy of Dune is disgusting.

Dushku is a great actress when she's just being asked to play a single character. I love Faith and I'm one of the few people that watched the entire run of Tru Calling. But she doesn't have the kind of chameleon abilities needed to pull off Dollhouse. Sierra & Victor acted circles around her on a weekly basis. (She was also not very convincing when she had to play Buffy when they did a body-swap episode, whereas Sarah Michelle Gellar was an excellent Faith.)

I don't really recall any major anti-Martha sentiment within the fandom. I think that she's more forgotten than anything else, which is a shame. I certainly think that she got a raw deal. Certainly, given the year she spent traveling alone, hiding from the Master while spreading the word about the Doctor, she suffered more than nearly any other modern companion (up until Bill one-upped her by waiting for several years and then getting turned into a Cyberman).

The more time goes by, the more I can't stand Rose. I tolerated her OK back when she was the companion. But now, whenever I rewatch her episodes, she's very basic and I hate how gooey she & the Doctor got towards each other near the end. I never bought the romance between them for a second. I don't see how a 900 year old Time Lord could have his head turned by a 19 year old shop girl.

The philosophy of Dune is disgusting.

What is the philosophy of it?

I'm only really familiar with the David Lynch movie and the 2 SyFy miniseries from the early '00s. I don't remember the miniseries very well. And I mostly just enjoy the Lynch movie for all of the melodramatics. I love how nearly every line is either a whispered soliloquy or bellowed at the top of their lungs. "I will kill him!"

Star Trek V is very underrated and is the only movie that properly takes advantage of the chemistry between Kirk, Spock, & McCoy as a trio.

I think "Profit & Lace" is funny. It's not at all politically correct but it amuses me. In fact, I enjoy pretty much all of the Ferengi comedy episodes.

No, Pertwee was.

x1000. McCoy runs a somewhat distant second place to Pertwee.

Donna was the worst companion in NuWho.

I don't know how that could be an unpopular opinion. Donna was the worst kind of "point of view" / whiner character.

Lazenby is better than Moore and was the most convincing Bond in fight scenes until Craig cake along

Lazenby better than Moore? Hell yes. Moore's best take on the character was the largely mature For Your Eyes Only--which also happens to be the best film of the Moore era without question.

I don’t like Tony Stark/Iron Man. Sure he has a fun dry sense of humour but as a character he’s pretty boring. Same goes for his movies.

True.

-Seven & Ace are the best Doctor Who team

They were a great team, but the best? Not so sure about that.

Keep in mind it' s been some years since I read the book, but from what I remember:
Survival is the only thing that matters, even if you fully know that your actions will end up killing billions, extinguish cultures and "sterilise" whole planets.
And the only thing more important than personal survival is genetic survival, so you better be heterosexual and/or produce as many children as possible so that your genes continue into the future.

I don't know if it was major, but I do remember some anti-Martha sentiment because she wasn't Rose. I'm not sure she was given a fair shot. Also, I'm not sure if traveling around alone was the same kind of tragedy as Rose, Donna, Bill, Amy and Rory (I forget what happened to Clara, but I wasn't a fan of her as a companion anyway). Martha did help save the world, and it hardened her to join Torchwood.

I liked Martha, probably more than Rose. I loved the ending of her season and how her peaceful crusade was so instrumental to defeating the Master. I wish she had been around a little longer.

STTMP is one of the best ST films

The Phantom Menace is greatly underrated.

Data can be very tiresome at times

Q in TNG is a pain in the neck, and is much inferior to Guinan.

A nothing story, incoherent and cacophonous action, a cast that's reduced to playing SNL-level caricatures, and a total disinterest in the scores of crew fatalities that would have been galling even if one of the stars hadn't tragically perished before its release... Star Trek Beyond is a garbage fire of a movie.

Me too, I had no idea that was an unpopular opinion. She's not necessarily my favorite, but she's pretty high up on my list.
I also like Clara a lot.

Donna on the other hand, is pretty low on my list. I don't hate her, but she could definitely be annoying at times.
