What are your opinions regarding Star Trek that are, shall we say, unorthodox?

My unorthodox opinion is... Nurse Chapel should've never been a character in Strange New Worlds. Every storyline she has drags the series down and often Spock with her. Jess Bush is great, I would've liked to see her in another role, but complicating Chapel like this hasn't improved SNW or TOS.

Totally agree. She may be more of a fleshed out than the TOS version but she still seems to only exist as a character on the show to give Spock someone to be in love with.

And this isn’t saying Bush has been bad. She’s been fantastic. And she does have amazing chemistry with Peck.

TOS Chapel was far better. I'd take the 60's yearning as characterization over whatever insufferable characterization they were trying to modernize her with any day.

You think being fleshed out is always a good thing... unless the flesh is rotten, and then it's probably preferable to be bones.

Though Through the Lens of Time gave me some hope. I thought that was the most enjoyable she's been.

Never mind the tired military yes or no thing, here’s an unorthodox mind blower—SNW and TAS opening themes are better than any other TV Trek series. Discuss amongst yourselves.

Starfleet was the U.S. Navy in space, except where dramatically inconvenient.

The TNG stuff was revisionism, and who cares?

Actually, the last few pages really drove home to me my head canon idea (I know, wrong forum topic) that there was a political/philosophical shift thinking regarding Starfleet between Kirk and Picard's time.

Perhaps in order for a new species to join the Federation there was a shift in focus. This shift in focus used new or different terms to describe Starfleet. Much how the US had a War Department that became the Defense Department that the was renamed the War Department and will likely be renamed yet again in a couple of years. Or how the Japanese do not have a military but they have a defense force that fills the exact same role.

It's all politics. Head games. Propaganda. Mental gymnastics. It's being in a committed relationship but saying "it's complicated and we don't want to put labels on it". It's describing some thing's color as "it's salmon, not pink."

Starfleet is, and has always been the weaponized arm of the Federation tasked with protecting and defending the Federation from both external and internal threats while it's stated mission focuses on scientific discovery, exploration, and humanitarian aid.

Maybe this is unorthodox: I skip almost all opening themes in Star Trek.

TOS and TAS here. SNW just doesn’t do it for me.
