Which is awkward because Jennifer Lien was outstanding in American History X. VOY did not write her well at all.
Kes is the worst thought out character in the history of the franchise. Poorly conceived, poorly written and poorly acted.
Here I have to disagree — Jennifer Lien was fine.I can't agree with this strongly enough. A misbegotten character played by a plank of wood.

I was watching some season three episodes last night and it just surprised me how completely flat she was, even in “Before and After” which was focused on Kes.
To be fair, I wish they had also blown Harry Kim out of an airlock at the same time they let Lien go.
Beltran as well!
Sadly, a syndrome suffered by anyone on Voyager that wasn’t Janeway, Seven, the Doctor, and to some extent Tuvok.Poorly conceived, poorly written
I thought B'Elanna was written pretty well. There wasn't a lot to go around when Seven showed up, but her episodes were always enjoyable.Sadly, a syndrome suffered by anyone on Voyager that wasn’t Janeway, Seven, the Doctor, and to some extent Tuvok.
Has anyone asked Berman, Braga, et al, why they conceived the character/species with such a short lifespan?
It wasn't Berman, he likes breasts too much.I’m okay not knowing whose kink drove that particular creation.
On paper, the idea of such a short lifespan is interesting. Particularly in this case, since Kes turned 2 years old toward the end of the (produced) first season, in "TWISTED". (It was the next to final season 1 produced episode "THE 37's".) Berman was hoping for a 7 year run for VOY, which could have been an interesting entire life journey for Kes, since that wpuld basically be her entire life.Has anyone asked Berman, Braga, et al, why they conceived the character/species with such a short lifespan?
I wonder if it would be different if they cast an older actress as Kes, perhaps someone closer to 40?On paper, the idea of such a short lifespan is interesting. Unfortunately, the reality was less interesting than the idea.
