What are your opinions regarding Star Trek that are, shall we say, unorthodox?

Here I have to disagree — Jennifer Lien was fine.

I was watching some season three episodes last night and it just surprised me how completely flat she was, even in “Before and After” which was focused on Kes.

To be fair, I wish they had also blown Harry Kim out of an airlock at the same time they let Lien go.

I didn't realize she voiced Agent L in the MIB animated series until well after the fact.
However, it should have been obvious considering it was the same vocal delivery she gave as Kes.
She was replaced at the same time she was let go from Voyager.

I like Kes and Jennifer Lien but the more we get away from Voyager, the more I realize the character really didn't work. I mostly liked Kes in 2 episodes, Warlord and Before and After, and I liked her better with the longer hair. The writers wrote themselves into a corner with the short lifespan thing and it mostly didn't work well. Also, Fury is still a really bad an insulting episode.

I don't hate Kes' character or how Lien portrayed her, but she was not compelling, either. She had potential, yes, but it was squandered. Both by the writers and the actress.

Has anyone asked Berman, Braga, et al, why they conceived the character/species with such a short lifespan?

I’m okay not knowing whose kink drove that particular creation.
It wasn't Berman, he likes breasts too much.

On paper, the idea of such a short lifespan is interesting. Particularly in this case, since Kes turned 2 years old toward the end of the (produced) first season, in "TWISTED". (It was the next to final season 1 produced episode "THE 37's".) Berman was hoping for a 7 year run for VOY, which could have been an interesting entire life journey for Kes, since that wpuld basically be her entire life.

Unfortunately, the reality was less interesting than the idea.

They could have put a short lifespan character like Kes (some other species though) on DS9 instead of Jadzia. Instead of being about to conceive a child, Bashir could have been on the cusp of extending her lifespan, only for her to die, her dreams unrealized.

I wonder if it would be different if they cast an older actress as Kes, perhaps someone closer to 40?
