What are your opinions regarding Star Trek that are, shall we say, unorthodox?

I'll begin,

Star Trek should be rebooted and set at least 1000 years in the future after some terrible cataclysm with Earth finally out of it. We stop having to worry about already being dealing with retconning moments in our own past and we can accept wide ranging social changes and stop having the future be obsessed with 20th century pop culture.

It's the one major homeworld we haven't destroyed. Of course, there'll be New Earth if that happens. Unless Humans become the minority alien refugees on another species' planet.

Depending on how long ago the explosion was, we'll have people who still remember hunting down alien-scavenged Earth nostalgia saved by being offworld at the time.

Or do you mean Humans are extinct?

Do you see ID as derivative at all ? A better take on the same idea?

Good version:

I think it’s superficially derivative, but that this is an overstated criticism. The most egregious instance being Spock screaming ‘Khan’ which is… well, it’s just silly.

But there is (for me) just so much to enjoy. The action set pieces are stunning. The general level of performance and direction is really good. I love Cumberbatch in particular.

I like TWoK, but it’s a TV Movie dressed up as cinema. It has a nice space battle, but otherwise it lacks a lot of what makes a movie for me, the most notable thing being a lack of any kind of face to face meeting of protagonist/antagonist.

Evil version:

Eh, whatevers. I just wanted to kick the thread off with a firecracker.

We also see why he isn’t ready yet to be a starship captain. Admiral Marcus manipulated him quite easily.
Which is actually an extension of the story of 09 that I find very enjoyable, similar to follow up with Spock and his navigating his emotions and the ups and downs that he faces.

Both go through a great coming of age style story through the three films.

He has no long past history with Khan, and Khan has no personal grudge against Kirk in particular, though Kirk has Pike's death to blame him for (interesting reversal, Kirk's mentor instead of Khan's love dies, due to a delberate attack, not the passive result of natural forces (planet exploding)) although they try to build an uneasy truce by having them cooperate in their zoom through space together.

No Marla either - it might have been a little crowded to have Marla and Carol in the same film. No time to have a captain's table supper and compare him to other forceful leaders of history when you're avenging. None of his followers thawed.

Into Darkness is my second favorite Trek film behind The Motion Picture.

Didn’t expect that!

I do think it’s really, really a very good movie though.

We don’t say controversial anymore, so *unorthodox* opinion, but over time it’s become my favorite of the Kelvin movies.

The idea that it’s a beat for beat remake of TWoK gets bandied about a lot and it just doesn’t hold water. They are very different stories as you said.
