What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

That's true. It's interesting to note though that the movie takes place when the Dominion War I think was still happening. At this point we are years from the TNG time period. I feel like the Federation lost it's way in many things during that war. They also looked the other way when Sisko informed them about Section 31 being a thing, including the virus they invented to kill all the Changlings.

Point being, the Federation and Starfleet have no issue violating the Prime Directive when it suits their needs. I find the "we must allow people to die" so as to not violate it to be incredibly hypocritical.

Seriously -- another Controversial Opinion -- I don't get what you guys see in SNW. "It's like TOS!" No, it's not. Other than some visual cues, the two shows could not be more dissimilar. And it sounds like it's going to become sillier and sillier. You only like it because it's the Flavor the Month.

For many, it’s TOS without being TOS. It lets some like that “era” of Trek without having to see beehive hairdos, greasepaint Klingons, Shatner and cheap looking sets.

I like SNW, although like all Treks, it’s hardly flawless. Pike is too much Captain Dad and Spock + Chapel = cringe (for example). But for the most part I think it gets the job done in the entertainment dept.

I get why people like SNW but I am surprised that it gets so much love. I'm not used to being in the minority when it comes to my opinion on a Trek series, especially as it's supposed to be like TOS and I love that show.

TOS is what got me into Star Trek, and it remains my favourite series. I can say without a doubt that Strange New Worlds feels a lot like TOS.

There's a strong sense of fun and adventure, and the show doesn't take itself too seriously, just like TOS. But it can also quickly pivot into something far more poignant, much like TOS.

Even more importantly, the characters feel like actual people, as they did in The OriginalSeries. You can believe they're genuinely friends outside of their official duties. They showed honest, human emotions and don't carry that TNG era feeling of perfection.

It's refreshing to have relatable characters again.

The show is already 3 years old and seemingly still popular. I think we've moved beyond being a "flavour of the month."

Plus, i find it somewhat insulting that you assume people only like something because it's new and not because it's a genuinely well made series that can and does appeal to long time fans of the franchise.

The fact that it's as popular as it is, does seem to ruffle the feathers of certain parts of the fandom.

What's hilarious to me is that some segments of fandom (does not include Lord Garth at all) both want SNW cancelled and Kurtzman fired (from a cannon, in some instances) yet also complain that SNW is cancelled. It's less a controversial opinion on my part and more s confusion aspect as to how those two ideas happen. Yes, yes, nature of humanity blah blah blah.

Honestly, the reason I like SNW is because of Pike. Pike carries the show for me. He's not the biggest, or most unique, but he's collected through much of it and inspires a measure of respect that I appreciate in a character.

But, that said, I get why it doesn't appeal to all fans. Honestly, no Trek should appeal to all fans.

While I disagree with Garth's assertion, this is hardly fair as he defended Discovery and other newer Trek properties despite mixed reception.

Sure, absolutely. It's perfectly fine not to like something. People are entitled to their opinions. I myself am known to have a few strong ones.

I'm aware of his opinions on various series. Thats what makes the "flavour of the month" comment all the more perplexing.

Chicken sandwich and coffee!
That's what Kirk ordered and the food dispenser gave it to him with a side order of tribbles. But it doesn't prove that the tribbles were eating the chicken. Maybe they were eating the bread.

I like SNW because I like the characters - whether or not they "line up" with the TOS versions. I find the show entertaining.

Of course, I also liked DISCO...

It’s weird. If you asked me what an ideal TOS prequel would look like, it would look largely like SNW. So I can understand the affection many people here have for it.

When I watch it? I just feel empty inside, nothing about it sparks anything inside me.

One of those things where I’m unfortunately unable to “go home again”.
