What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

It's not about liking or not liking social contact. It's about giving the other person the choice on when and how to respond. You know like texting "call me when you have time"

The issue with that is I've found the social norm which has developed around texting is you must respond immediately or the other person gets pissed off and thinks you're consciously ignoring them.

People need to understand that we have lives which don't always allow us to respond instantly... what's worse is that you actually need to tell people that, otherwise, they get emotional.

We live in a society that's brought up making assumptions to the tenth power apparently.
They don't really think about things it seems.

As for making calls... I actually prefer to call people and say what I want in under a minute rather than writing a long haul text message.

Especially since virtually everyone doesn't use actual grammar or spell checking to text. So much of texting involves shortened words that I spend more time trying to figure out than if you either wrote with more precision or simply call and say what you need.

(Truly, my mom and I are the only people I know who uses actual sentences and grammar when texting. Even my wife, who has a VERY good vocabulary, uses shorthand often.)

Not sure I can %100 agree but they are my favourite part of those movies. They stirring and wonderful. Fantastic composer

When they are saving the day in Beyond and that theme comes crashing in... it got a genuinely strong emotional reaction from me (positively) in the cinema. Lump in the throat and stuff. Seeing a modernised take on your childhood heroes, kicking butt and being awesome.

It's something alright is that theme.

Extremely rampant.

When you hit the "THIS ISN'T WORKING" mode during a Convo, I find I **REALLY** miss slamming down the receiver onto the cradle of the ol' landline. Pushing the "end call" button is similar but not as satisfying. Ignoring a text just doesn't have the same satisfaction (because they know you got their last message which means YOU didn't get to end the convo).

As you may be able to discern from several of my posts, I'm wordy & usually have to force myself to use text-speak: IMO, etc. Most of the time I have to Google the term to understand it; then again... I'm "old".

I miss slammimg the phone for those reasons, too.

And I'm 42, and I still don't know many of the text shorthands. Guess that makes me 'old', too.

(I prefer to think of people like us... as 'classic' or 'old school'.)

Just imagine how things are going to be when everybody starts using emoji's for everything and you have to decipher the pictographic meanings of each emoji.

It's Heiroglyphics all over again.

Nowhere else to put this but here:

I just got into a weird argument with someone elsewhere and this person was focused on nitpicking minutiae of a video to the exclusion of all else and kept asking "What's the point of X?" "What's the point of Y?" "This doesn't make sense!" "Why?" "Why?" "Why?" At first, I didn't mind. But, after a while, it started getting really annoying.

So I told my friend about it and said, "I hate saying this, but I feel like I'm arguing with a hardcore Star Trek Fan who doesn't like anything after The Next Generation ended or a hardcore Star Wars Fan who doesn't like anything after The Original Trilogy!"

I swear to God, the conversation had nothing to do with Star Trek but, for a brief moment, I had to check to see if I was Roland in a Facebook Chat or Garth on TrekBBS.

It was weird. I seriously felt like I was here. Correction: Here, if I'd just been in a heated thread that went on for pages and pages and pages... and pages. It had that type of feeling.

So this person was a connection through someone else who's a real life friend of mine. I looked at their profile to learn more about who this mutual FB friend was and sure enough...

... turns out he's a Trekkie. And an old-school Trekkie at that. I should've known. :guffaw:

How's this for a controversial opnion:

Now let me set this up by saying that I in NO way believe in the kind of concepts propounded by this organization. I just think...
the Confederation of Earth (from the current season of ST:Picard) is actually kind of cool. At least this alternate Earth empire has BALLS!

I think the Michael Giacchino theme for the Kelvin Movies is the best Star Trek theme ever. Bar none.

I don't think there's much point in comparing it to the others since the tone and style is so wildly different, but I do think it's a fantastic theme that perfectly encapsulates the more action adventure tone of those films while still feeling 100% like Star Trek.

I am a little bit torn in as much as...
They beat the Borg. Is the universe better without the Borg, even if Earth and surrounding areas are a war-torn shithole?

The Confederation is just as bad as the Borg. Meanwhile, in the "proper" timeline, Picard just blew an opportunity to do something far better. Make peace with them. Now, don't get me wrong, Picard's reaction is understandable. But I still feel that there was some level of sincerity in the Queen's overture. She was only stunning the Bridge officers. She said she needed power. What did she need it for? Were her people dying? This was an opportunity to make good on the realization has he had upon visiting the Artifact and meeting Hugh again. That the Borg are victims. He let the Romulans down. Here he can make up for that by helping the Borg's victims. It would be a wonderful way to honor Hugh's memory and legacy. Instead, he blew up the ship. All Q had to do was look for the nearest explosion.

I still don't understand how it could ever be possible to make peace with the Borg.

There is no way to make peace with the Borg Collective, or even tolerate it.

But the individual drones are the victims and slaves of the Collective, so peace with liberated drones, or theoretical groups of liberated drones is possible.
Likewise, I guess peace with the Collective is possible...provided it/the Borg Queen agrees to release all drones and make Assimilation a strictly voluntary process. But that's never gonna happen.
