Exactly. How parochial does someone have to be, to take more than 1/10 of a second to absorb the fact that a woman's name is Michael and then move on without confusion or comment?

It's almost a religion in my part of Virginia. The series was set not far from where I grew up and live. It's not my favorite show ever but it's definitely earned a soft spot in my heart, especially the theme music. The 1971 pilot TV-movie "The Homecoming" is exquisite and required Holiday viewing for me.
Ah, the Waltons. TV should go back to that, you know? I hate all this crap now.
The perfect video to link this with Trek. 
Definitely one of the few shows of the time that paid attention to ongoing continuity. Episodes were definitely not completely stand alone.
I've never seen The Waltons. It's probably pretty good, and I don't doubt the people who say it's worth checking out, but it doesn't really sound like my type of show.
Ike Godsey blowing away that space cruiser was the best scene in Season 7.
