Yeah, I figured the Federation had enough to understand the basics of the biology and history but not enough for their own genetic engineering to restore the population.

A Whale augment may have the same need for self-aggrandizing and constant need for revenge as Khan against those who wouldn't give it the proper respect "it deserved"...

So, no dino-de-extinction using the blood cells inside the stomachs of mosquitoes stuck in amber since the cretaceous period; huh?

My controversial opinion is that STIV is rather silly.

That was the first target in WW3.

BTW, it should have been called "Cretaceous Park"... the Jurassic was much earlier.

    Oh, I know.

I drew all of that in 6th grade. Had to get it right.

Okay, I see. Well, the easy answer would be Kirk ... justified (barely) by Kirk being the author of the new whales' existence.

Although I've gotta tell you: A whale with an artificial fluke just isn't gonna cut it.

    lol...“narrative”

I always just assumed Earths planetary government (or the Federation) would just start...more or less...a cloning program of some kind to insure the species long term survival.

Head canon: Cloning program+ genetic splicing/engineering to ensure viability via a in-vitro fertility problem.

The whales died out before the Federation was made, so they didn't have any intact DNA on hand. Now, they do, and the biologists would be having a field day.

Plus IV actually has a damn good message, a environmental-conservationist one. It fits as a 'trek' film IMO, and a perfect early-mid wave green film in a way.

What do the nu-series propose for us to do? Ride around playing the beastie boys? Another revenge story?

Don't execute terrorists without trial? That was pretty damn topical in 2013 and just as on the nose as "save the whales"

But in execution it is some people in weird clothes having "wacky hijinks"(tm) in 1980s San Francisco... Oooh so Star Trek!

I'm currently rewatching S7 of DS9 on H&I, and that's not true at all. They started laying the groundwork for Julian & Ezri in "Afterimage," the third episode of the season. You may not have spotted it at the time, but it was definitely there.

I mean, it's hilarious because they got some genuine reactions from people on the street.

Well IRL some relationships are based solely on liking the other person's bank account and it works. This is love Trek style where there is no money to claim lol

    No I don't think so...;)

If you follow the link I included in my comment, it'll take you right to a description of the scene I'm thinking of.
