What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

the discovery, lower deck s fan appears in general to be far more precious than your fan of the older shows I find.
They seem more defensive, and take any criticism far more serious
Who knows maybe the reboot movies get more criticism, but I am not sure as I hardly even venture in to their forums.

It does not help the new shows no matter how good or bad they are will always be compared to the older ones
TNG was compared to TOS, Ds9 to TNG.
My own personal favorite was DS9, but dont feel compelled to defend it should some dislike it..

As for Gene Roddenberry, his importance went a long time ago,
Abrams got the same treatment. But honestly, these series get the "not real Trek" treatment more vocally. If people don't like it that's ok. But these series have to fight for a place at the table. Now, I think that is fully a product of the anonymity of the Internet and all that brings. So I think all that impacts discussion either for or against.

No. All fandoms are "precious" in that way. I've seen fans of the older shows become just as defensive over any slight and take it quite seriously. Be it complaints about over acting, cheesy sets, moralizing or just about anything.

I don't know if it's a controversial opinion per se, so I'll let you posters, judges of that. I think DS9 is a much more adult show than the others in the Franchise. It treats real problems that (if you change a few minor things here and there) mirror our society and that we can relate to, even people that are not overly interested in Sci. Fi. When I watch an episode of DS9 with some rare exceptions, they feel more real, less cartoonish ( with maybe the exception of the Ferengi episodes).

DS9 does feel more "grounded" than the others with the arguable exception of ENT.

I think Voy and TOS are pretty much on an equal level of quality. The bad episodes of TOS are matched by the ones of Voyager.
I'm just thinking it in terms of repeat viewing. There are maybe less than 10 TOS episodes that I really like and I want to watch again. There are tons more Voyager episodes that I've watched multiple times.

It's always kind of hard to fathom that people rewatch modern Trek - or, for that matter, do "rewatches" of entire series. There is so much television and movie material out there.

I watched TOS any number of times, but that pretty much came to an end probably twenty years or more ago. I've got them all on disc, but the only time I watch one is if it shows up on MeTV on Saturday night and I'm getting ready to sleep.

One of the near-infinite examples where people might think differently.

Imagine that.

Voyager has more good episodes than TOS.

TOS is the best science fiction show of all time. It may be one of the most pop-culturally relevant television shows in history.

I seriously doubt that the average citizen knows about Katheryn Janeway or cares much about Tuvok.

Im sorry, but despite your personal feelings or opinions, or what Trek you grew up on, it’s not even fucking close.

Like....NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.

Star Trek is comfort food.

I find myself rewatching not just Star Trek but other series, some older some newer because 90% of what is “new” is garbage.

I know what I’m getting with Trek or The West Wing, House M.D, Seinfeld, the original Magnum PI, Cheers, Ted Lasso, Brooklyn 99, etc...

It's my opinion based on what I like watching. I started as a TNG fan in the 90s. Maybe that has something to do with it.

This is not a TNZ thread, stick to controversial views about the franchise and not the fandom, take it elsewhere.

Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.

With the rise of the internet and the fall of the editor, make that 99%

Agree. The reason some people perceive 'new' stuff is more crap than old stuff, probably is because most of the old crap already has been filtered out by time and subsequently forgotten. The 80's had just as many lousy TV productions as today.

Also, of course, it's possible to be 'left behind' in your tastes (i.e. you don't embrace the new styles of storytelling that develop, such as for example the much faster pace of today).
