98% of the thread will say Alien and Aliens. And I agree.
They are the most satisfying and least problematic of the films.

My opinion as to which I'd call my favourite seems to bounce around based on my mood whenever I do a re-watch, but I will say that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection are unfairly hated. Granted, with Resurrection it's probably nostalgia speaking, it being the one I got to see in theatres first, so that experience alone works in its favor. Alien 3, I don't know why, but I just dig it for some reason.

Which is better? Alien, because at the time Ridley Scott was a better director than James Cameron, and their relative skill levels show in the works.

Agreed. I still think Alien has the advantage.
I haven't watched the theatrical cut apart from the last time they showed the Alien trilogy as a special show at the cinema, it's a far superior version.
Alien was the movie that started it all. It was a slow, atmospheric horror. A movie that I had seen countless times on VHS before I actually managed to catch it at a cinema as a special showing (and despite knowing the movie inside and out jumped when Dallas was grabbed).
Aliens with Cameron at the helm didn't make the classic sequel mistake of just repeating the first one, but was able to take it in a completely new direction. An action movie to be sure, but still suspenseful as it's an hour or more before things start kicking off.
I regard both movies as equal in my eyes. Alien 3 was a mess. Fincher was robbed, had he been left to his own devices and been able to truly show his vision I have no doubt that today we'd be finding it hard to choose between the first three films. With the behind-the-scenes chaos, I'm actually glad the movie turned out as well as it did, but I always go for the Assembly Cut - Fincher will never do a Director's Cut, probably because he never even got to film what he wanted.
Alien Resurrection is a disaster. A Whedan script, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and an amazing cast, but it just fails. Simply put, it was probably a huge mistake to bring Sigourney back, they should have left Ripley dead and allowed themselves more leeway.
I always regret that they never started the AVP movies based on the Dark Horse Comics series.
Alien and Aliens is the right answer because they've got the best acting and the best stories. I still like the others to some degree.

From memory the main addition is around Ripley's daughter who died whilst she was in stasis, which adds to the bond she devolps with Newt.
Every wondered what those green boxes are when they are discussing what sruvived the dropship crash into the APC. They are rather large guns. Overall 17 or so mins are added. But the big one is the addition to Ripley's back story.

There's a terrible prologue at Hadley's Hope which establishes Newt and her family (her father leaves to investigate a strange noise or something). There's an extended sequence in which Ripley learns about her daughter. There's a bit where the Marines put out sentry guns as defense against the aliens. That's about all I can recall, but it does add like 15 minutes of junk.
Only the sequence involving Ripley's daughter is good and necessary for the film, the rest is crap, especially the prologue with Newt's family.
