I've seen Aliens several times, and I just watched Alien all the way through for the first time yesterday and Alien 3 for the first time today. Of those, I'd say Alien and Aliens as the best, but with Aliens being a bit better in my opinion. I like the original a lot, but it could get a bit too "2001" for my tastes (meaning in this case a lot of slow, pointless shots that actually detract from the tension for me because it just gets tedious). Also, Ripley and Parker were the only characters I found likeable, which was a bit annoying.

Aliens
has problems with characters too (most of them are irritating, except Ripley and Newt) but as an action movie its very good and I think it succeeds at being a good action movie slightly better then the first movie succeeds at being a straight horror movie. It also had, in my opinion, more memorable moments and lines. So, It beats the first for me, by a slight margin. Honestly, if Alien had slightly tighter editing and a better written side cast it would be harder to pick the better movie.

Also, I'd just like to add that, having just seen Alien 3 (the theatrical cut, I know there is another cut but I got it on the Alien Quadrilogy set I just got a Wal-Mart for $10, and it just has the original version), its not a bad movie. It has some deep flaws, and I do think it was a bad idea to

Kill newt and Hicks

but overall I liked it. It had some cool moments, several of the side cast were interesting and while it had big flaws I was never bored. Not a great movie by any means, but I thought it was enjoyable.

98% of the thread will say Alien and Aliens. And I agree. :)

They are the most satisfying and least problematic of the films.

Certainly, but the real question will be which film is considered the best.

I recently watched both of them back to back for the first time in years and it confirmed what I've longed believed: Alien is the superior film.
These are correct.

Alien and Aliens are the best but I also really liked Alien 3. It wrapped up the trilogy pretty well.

Does "Predator" count since they are in the same universe as the "Alien" movies?

Me I am going with "Alien" and "Aliens" and I think I like the first better though I do think Ripley is more intresting in "Aliens" and I also think the monster looks better in "Aliens."

What gives the edge to the first movie though is the supporting cast and the overall scary atmosphere.

Alien(1979) horror science-fiction at it's best
Aliens(1986) brilliant sequel to the impressive Alien taking it in a new direction with the Colonial Marines action

I am still waiting for a third Alien film that I really like. Maybe, Alien:Covenant or one of the other upcoming Ridley Scott Alien prequels will be it.
