What are you celebrating this year?

Celebration!

I didn't want to vote "Christmas" because it seems like the poll option has a religious connotation for it and I do not. Technically, I am exchanging gifts (among other things ) with my girlfriend, who will be sticking around for New Year's.

I voted Giftmas because we put up the tree and all that but do not practice the religious aspects of Christmas.

I agree with you on the carols, Mark - my solution is to amass a collection of Christmas CDs that's getting to be almost embarassingly big and will continue to get bigger.

I really don't need any more versions of "The 12 Days of Christmas," though. Nuthin' wrong with it, per se, but why do so many people insist on including that song on their collections?

Kathryn, i did the same thing for years. My Chrismas CD collection is pretty ridiculous and it's hard finding CDs that don't have all the same songs as the rest of them.

The problem is, i can no longer listen to Christmas music! I got tired of it a couple of years ago. Go figure! I'd be happy to send some to you if i have any CDs that you don't have. PM me!

**edit...just PM'd you

Christmas and Giftmas. My family celebrates Christmas in a BIG way. Huge, elaborate Christmas trees, a big family dinner, tons of presents, lots of Christmas music, the works.

But, we're all atheists. But we love Christmas just the same. My mom got that passion from her Mom, a first generation German-American. I picked it up from my Mom.

So, I guess you could say it's Giftmas, but I love all the trappings that Christmas involves. Life is too short to not find at least one time of year to add some color to an otherwise bleak time, to be silly, to a little more generous, to partake in comforting traditions and be happy to still be alive.

Just wondering what holidays those of us here are celebrating.

I had a couple of random girls wish me a "Happy Fake Christmas" yesterday as we passed each other while shopping. I returned the favour, picked up the dried spices I was looking for, and pondered on the peculiar joys of the season...

I prefer to hear them live, actually. For years, the univeristy I attended would get some people together for Christmas carols. It was great.

I also hope that the choir at the cathedral will be singing Silent Night at Christmas Eve. For some reason I have a weakness for that.

^"12 Days of christmas"???

Is this a serious question?

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me
A partridge in a pear tree...

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me
Two turtledoves
and a partridge in a pear tree...

Etc...

But I didn't know the song before I was like 10 or something and read the Carl Barks story where Uncle Scrooge is hypnotized into giving the things in it as gifts to a dog...

I am so glad that Festivus made it onto this list.

I think it is totally awesome that we have turned a totally absurd fictional 'holiday' made up on Seinfeld (of all TV shows!), into a real holiday. Jerry must be so proud!

Must be the whole 'Airing of Grievances' thing - it's so.....liberating!

Now where did I put that pole????

Festivus... I've got a lot of problems with you people!!!!

Oh, and Christmas. But it's not so much celebrating a religious Christmas as it is celebrating "archeryguy got kicked out of the dorms, and let's buy each other stuff" Christmas.

I celebrate Christmas but will attend parties for other holidays. I'm an equal-opportunity partier. :)
