What are the facts about the crystal skulls?

I guess the skulls are made out of the same material that is used in data chips. Apparently they are designed so that light going into the skull is redirected to the eyes and mouth. There are many different crystal skulls that have popped up, but there are only 6-8 of them that have been confirmed of ancient origin. Theoretically, there are 13 ancient skulls.

At least the specimens at the Smithsonian and the British Museum of Natural History are recent fakes. They were both made with rotary disc grinders and the Smithsonian one was ground using carborundum (a 20th century abrasive). The other ones are probably also recent forgeries, as none has a good provenance.

The Mitchell-Hedges skull mentioned in the movie...there is a Skull expert that believes that its a fake due to the inconsistent nature of her story, its apprently changed over the times. The skulls are supposed to contain sillicon fabrics interwoven in the skull base themselves but no one really knows I think how they were carved or who made them leaving them a mystery that not too many in the mainstream are familar with.
