What are the essential componets of s Starfleet vessel?

HAL.9000

Lieutenant Commander
I was thinking of all the variations of Starfleet vessels there are and how to create my very own. But there seems to be a certain formula one needs to follow.

1. A saucer section

2. Warp drive nacelles

3. That bluish emitter dish thingy attached to the main body (sorry, I dont know what it's called)

Seems that as long as you have those three components in any variation, you have created a Starfleet vessel.

Please correct me if I'm wrong or post pics of alternate variations if you can.

Navigational deflector. Most designs have 'em, a few don't.

Though with some of the newer 24th-Century designs, the "saucer" sections are shaped more like wedges.

The Constellation class doesn't have a Nav. Deflector. and it is one of my favorite ships
I think that the essential parts are assuming a ship that is going to warp speed: A Warp core and shielding to match, Nacelles (with or without pylons), and a crew.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women...

oops! wrong essentials!

I'd think most of what we saw on the Enterprise-D.

A deflector system of some sort.
Warp nacelles that have forward clearance for the collectors.
A clear area for a warp core ejection port.
A shuttle bay.
A docking port.
Phaser emitters and a torpedo tube.
Impulse engines with an exhaust that is clear of ship structure being in the way.
Sensors.
Fuel and other types of hatches.
Escape pods.

A torpedo tube isn't necessarily an essential item. I can think of more than a handful of starship mission profiles that wouldn't call for it.

Also, IF you didn't want to totally count on a Ship's internal power systems for a synthetic Crew...
Don't forget about these guys...

In the OP the word Vessel is used instead of Starship. That means it could be anything from a Shuttle to a Starship. So, keeping with the OP, with all Vessels what common components do you need (other than steering columns and dashboards) :)

I keep picturing rows upon rows of hamsters in wheels powering up the thing. THAT is an essential part of any starship.;)

WELL, IF you're going to be FUNNY :p Then the most essential component is a "Buttered-Toast/Cat". Then again a ship powered entirely by Rube Goldberg devices would be interesting (if a bit slow)

An entirely serious idea I came up with is that a lot of people compare starships to Navy Vessels. Look at what your average motorboat requires and compare that to a starship (with some careful thought that you are comparing a motor boat to a Starship.)

"We look for things that make us go."

(See, what really happened was it broke down when the cat ran left instead of right, knocked over the entire domino table.)
