I think really it comes down to the 'get out of jail free card' line they put in All Good Things...
That the future would not unfold the way it was portrayed in AGT. The timeline diverged probably at that point.
From a real world point of view I read somewhere that they had wanted a new ship for the movies. Some of that had to do with that the ship and sets they felt didn't translate well to the big screen....for whatever that's worth. I guess in retrospect I liked the Enterprise-E and it did look good on the big screen. But I didn't really have an issue with the Enterprise-D in Generations. In fact, it felt a bit surreal seeing the Enterprise-D, the sets and even the TV series uniform (TNG or DS9 uniform) on the big screen.
And I happened to like the D. At first in the first season I hated it. But it grew on me after a while and when it was destroyed I cringed a bit. She died before her time
