What about the writers of the new show?

Yeah, those will all probably work because the links will play the videos directly on YouTube. The error is that the videos are disabled from embedded play on other websites.

Re: If we want a sci-fi comedy the answer is obvious.

Do you have a favorite writer (including science fiction writers) that you would like to see on the new series?

My first pick: John Scalzi

Agree on both counts.

A collection of essays, Boarding The Enterprise Transporters, Tribbles and the Vulcan Death Grip in Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek edited by David Gerrold and Robert J. Sawyer.

The essay All Our Tomorrows: The Shared Universe of Star Trek by Allen Steele.

Steele commented that the best scripts tended to be written by people with a background in speculative fiction. And when they were replaced by others with no such background, the stories were mediocrities.

"Not surprisingly, the shows became increasingly stale, coming to resemble upgraded versions of Tom Corbett or Space Patrol."

... In his opinion. Which happens to be in a book edited by one of the people he's praising. ;)

I feel in the other hand that while some of Trek's good episodes have been speculative 'hard' science fiction, I'd argue many of the good ones and indeed my personal favourites have not been, and would probably fall into the category he disparages.

We all want writers who will generate more of what we personally enjoyed about the franchise so far.

I think some people actually want writers that are strong in areas where the franchise didn't exactly shine so far, e.g. humor ;)
