What about Garek...

Captain
Captain
Just finished "The Wire" really cool episode, however, I did get me thinking, was the real reason the Garek was put into exile ever reveled. Did it have something to do with his Father, who Garek found on the Dominion Prison Asteroid??

If you're interested, read the book "A Stitch in Time", in which Garak chronicles his life story. It's my favorite Star Trek novel, and it's penned by Garak (Andrew Robinson) himself. No ghost writers, either. I can't recommend it enough.

If you want immediate satisfaction, though--

A Fall From Grace

Garak's speciality for the order was as an interrogator. One such interogation cost the life of Procal Dukat, the father of Gul Skrain Dukat. Garak and Dukat remained bitter enemies until Dukat's death in 2375.

When Tain found out about Elim and Palandines relationship, he ordered Garak to end it immediately, and never see Palandine again. Garak went to see her anyway, and was captured by Lokar. The resulting confrontation ended with Lokar's death.

Tain saw Garak's disobdience as a betrayal, and did nothing to help him with his resulting legal troubles. Garak was exiled from Cardassia, never to return on the pain of death.

Lokar had served under Skrain Dukat, and Dukat had Garak 'assigned' to his command on the space station, Terok Nor in the Bajor sector. Dukat saw to Garak's humiliation by assigning him the tasks of a humble tailor. Garak was at first resistant and spent a great deal of time ‘preparing’ the shop until Dukat threatened to have him working alongside the Bajoran slaves in the mining operations. Garak arranged for Quark to supply him with the necessary equipment and decided to take his punishment as a challenge, determined to become a vital element of Terok Nor. The business developed quickly and Garak was soon charging high prices for his repair work and began to design clothing for sale.

That's kind of a mess.

And Dukat's name is "Skrain?"

When did that happen? :wtf:

It was first mentioned there and then throughout the post-finale novels. Damar's first name was given there as well - Corat. I like both of them.

I don't think it's ever revealed in canon, per se, but is taken from Dukat's logs when the Dominion retake Terok Nor after Sisko withdraws.

From A Time To Stand: "Permanent documentation file, Dukat, S.G. Each day brings reports of new victories. The war continues to go well. The enemy is retreating on almost all fronts. It's only a matter of time before the Federation collapses and Earth becomes another conquered planet under Dominion rule. All in all, it's a good time for Cardassia. And the Dominion."

I think they've worked on the assumption that S.G. are his initials and not an abbreviation of Station Gul or something like that...

I do recall that Dukat called Elam Garek that "Despicable Taylor" to Ziyal upon learning that she was seeing him, while she was living on DS-9. So, even though Garek had at one time was pretty high up in the "Obsidian Order" Dukat reguarded his as nothing but a Despicable Taylor. Something much have happened that for some reason was never reveled in the show.

Resistance is Futile

I think he said "Tailor" referring to Garak's occupation while in exile...

Garak told Bashir so many lies about why he was exiled I think he just gave up... LOL!

Possibly. Though we've only seen a first-name/surname arrangement for Cardassians, so he could still easily be Skrain Dukat, station gul. ;)

*shrugs* I like it. It makes sense. It's apparently the backstory that Andrew J. Robinson invented for himself to guide his performance as Garak.

And Dukat's name is "Skrain?"

Andrew J. Robinson established it in his novel A Stitch in Time and later novels have followed his lead.

Clearly, Garak's Exile is a cover story.

Only the Obsidian Order knows the truth, and they're all dead. :rommie:

Maybe it was a plot between the Obsidian Order and the Founders to take out the Tal Shiar... muhuhahahaha!!!!
