Whale strandings

We have just had another mass whale stranding in Tasmania, between 80-100 long-finned pilot whales dead. After hearing reports of the stranding a Parks and Wildlife team was sent in by helicopter to investigate and found that 12 whales were alive but before a larger rescue team could arrive at the remote spot they all died.


We had another mass stranding of the same species the week before. 53 died but 11 were saved.

My question is to people here

Have you ever helped in a rescue attempt of stranded whales (or would you if you had an opportunity to)?

What were you doing to wildlife that you needed to be in rehab for. On second thought, never mind.

If I could I would certainly try to help out. It's such a sad thing for a community beach themselves.

If I had an opportunity, I'd probably help, but, being an hour away from a beach probably means that, by the time I hear about it, the whale's pretty much screwed.

I haven't had the opportunity to help out with one yet, but if one was in the area and I was able to help out, sure, I would be happy to participate.

I would certainly try to help any stranded animals if I was in a position to do so. The closest I've ever come to a stranding was when a half dozen dolphins were stranded on the beach near my house a couple of years ago. It was the only known stranding ever in this area.

Whale strandings are a natural occurrence, so while sad they are not something people should be wringing their hands over. Harpooning the big whales for 'scientific study', is.

Feline Leukemia and Canine Distemper occur naturally, as well. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be prevented and cured.
