WH complies with FOIA request for homebrew beer recipe.

Last year Obama bought a home-brew beer kit for the White House, and though the chef and his crew hadn't brewed before, they're getting pretty good at it. :)

The story mentions that to anyone's knowledge, the White House has never made beer or wine in its entire history, which is extremely surprising.

They released recipes for a Honey Brown Porter and a Honey Ale, and the chef mentions a new Honey Blonde (though the recipe isn't posted yet).

They even have a nice video of it.

This is an example of why the executive branch is different from the legislative branch. The House or Senate couldn't brew a beer without one party or the other throwing a gym sock in it, or tacking on so much pork (a little cinnamon from Indiana, some bay leaves from Massachussetts, some cranberries from Maine) that it would be bloated and undrinkable.

Time will tell if future administrations feel compelled to stick with "American style pilsner - for AMERICA!" or go nuts trying to brew a Candian lager for a visit by the Canadian PM, a London Ale for the British ambassador, then a Czech pilsner, a Belgian ale, a German Koslsch, A French Bordeaux, a Japanese Sake, ....

Administrations sometimes talk about their search for a top chef, and now they can search for a top brewmeister, too. :)

So what brews do you think the White House should try next?

I used to homebrew before developing health issues that generally left me on the sidelines as far as beer goes.

The current White House beer is dark, but not too dark. A porter, which is an ale. Ales are fermented rather quickly, without time to age and get that cask seasoning.

The prospective House brew is a lager, brewed long and cold in the New England winter, but also seemingly a bit more bolder and bitter.

OK beer analogies aside, I have no idea who I am going to vote for yet. I kinda like Obama but he has not proved to be a strong leader. All talk no results, like a strong tasting beer with 3% abv. Romney comes off like he would run the country like a CEO, so strong and hoppy up front but pandering to the foaming head on top.

This is the most hopeless feeling election I can remember.

Well, with Romeny nobody knows whether he'll serve Sam Adams Winterfest from Boston or a 3% Utah brew.

In any event, I think the White House will keep on brewing until we elect a Southern Baptist, even though a genuine WH bottled beer is probably one of the most premium brews on the planet just now (at least within the press corps or anyone who wants to show off their access).

And finally, it's nice to have some confirmation that Betty Ford wasn't running a still. I wonder if her clinic will try making a homebrew, or at least bottle the purple dragons that Britney Spears was always downing?

I'm glad our government has its priorities straight.

Which priorities do you feel the White House kitchen staff has most let the American people down on? The Affordable Cake Act? Or are you seriously operating under the delusion that the "government" is spending extensive time working on home brewed beer to the detriment of actual governmental business?

Lagers are also boring :p
(ETA: Technically, Ales are generally more bitter and flavorful. While there are some good Lagers, there are also American Pilsners like Budweiser and Miller).

Anyway, the first President to brew beer in the White House is a nice trivia question, along with the first President to make Ice Cream (James Madison) or fly a plane (I believe Teddy Roosevelt, but don't quote me). It's certainly better than President who got stuck in a bath tub. I'm curious how the recipes taste. Hopefully it's pretty good.

A good Chech Pilz is a mighty fine thing.

Bud and Miller are great presidential analogies. From America's Heartland. You're excited when you first see them, maybe things are about to change for the better. But then you realize they are watered down compared to the ads on TV, simply there to appeal to the masses but not strong enough to make any real impact. You realize after 4 years all you are left with is a bitter taste in your mouth and a bit of a headache.

Romney is a Mormon; he won't have them making beer in the kitchen.

I suspect that this is in response to that "Let's have a beer and sort this thing out" issue with that black college professor getting harrassed by the police. They sat down for beer, but the beer companies pitched a fit when it was the other guy's beer that they were shown drinking. This way they can't be seen pandering to one brewer.

I'd respect Barack a little more if he was working on the beer himself instead of just telling his chef to do it.

They're bland, appeal to people who don't know any better, and are owned by foreign corporations while pretending to be truly American? I think there's something to this beer analogy thing.
