Wesley Snipes Recounts Auditioning for La Forge

Like with all alternative casting you read about it's hard to imagine anybody else inhabiting the roles you know so well but I have to say I would love to have seen Snipes as La Forge. If only for the prospect of the guy playing the blind engineer ending up as Simon Phoenix in Demolition Man

" You're gonna regret this the rest of your life... both seconds of it!"

There’s a lot of anecdotal evidence online that Wesley Snipes isn’t the easiest to work with. I give him the benefit of the doubt with most of it as black actors get labelled with stuff like “difficult “ when a white counterpart would probably get praised as “committed”. But seeing what a tight unit the cast still are today I wonder if Snipes could’ve fitted in with it all and if he had, would it have benefited him with some of his other difficulties later in life?

Actually, I nearly included one of the Asian actors (John Lone from The Last Emperor) in my alternate cast. But I figured Freddie Krueger was funnier. It’s interesting that, during the Japan craze of the 80’s, Data might have come out of a Japanese design firm, or....is Soong and Asian name?

Other contenders for the part per Memory Alpha:

Among the performers who were considered to portray Data were John Lone, Robert Englund, actress Kim Miyori(Creating the Next Generation), Mark Lindsay Chapman, Kevin Peter Hall, Eric Menyuk, and Kelvin Han Yee. The latter four were being considered as of 13 April 1987, at which point Chapman was regarded as seemingly the favorite choice for the part.

I would be quite interested in what a female Data would have been like. I don't know Kim Miyori from anything, so the most I'm thinking is that they'd probably put her in a terrible "Page Boy" wig (like Lal) to drive home that she's an android.
I guess they'd probably would have paired female Data with Geordie?

With a Wesley Snipes Geordie...would they have been able to resist making it a romance?

Staaaaar Trek: TheNextGeneration

Stephen Macht as Jean-Luc Picard,

Billy Campbell as Bill Riker,

Robert Englund as Mr. Data,

Jenny Agutter as Dr. Beverly Crusher,

Denise Crosby as Deanna Troi,

Marina Sirtis as Tasha Yar,

...and introducing Shay Astar as Leslie Crusher!
Why do LaForge and Crusher get their jobs called out and no one else? Don't be defining peeps by their day jobs!

Crusher because she’s a goddamn doctor. A surgeon. For countless aliens and animals even. Like, that’s super hard.

Plus, Dr. Crusher is a cool name. I wish she kept her name in “All Good Things...” and had been...wait for it...CAPTAIN CRUSHER! In the 24th and a Half Century!!!

La Forge to remind us that this would likely be a very different character as first introduced. This may be apocryphal, but La Forge became an engineer in-part because Levar Burton was so great with technobabble. Snipes might have given off more hotshot pilot vibes. It could have been a very different character.

^^this

As the pilot, Snipes would have been a lot different, and there's some dialogue in season 1 that he'd add more relish to. The show would be different but still enjoyable. But apocryphal for different reasons...

Burton and his strengths, and that's before mentioning the Treknobabble that he made sound authentic... it's pretty great season 1 had a merry-go-round of chief engineers, complete with Montgummry S.C. Argyle and "S.C." stands for "Scotty Clone", not to mention Geordi was in Engineering half the time in season 1 anyway and never explained exposition as to how he got promoted - a little would have been nice but due to season 1 and his being down there more often than not, with 11001001 being quite the fortunate happenstance... given his uncertainty in "The Arsenal of Freedom", it doesn't not fit that behind the scenes Geordi was trying out different venues...

Great, now I'm imagining Ben Sisko meeting Geordi Snipes...

Imagination is great. Especially for crossovers...

I don't know anything about Kim Miyori so I can't imagine what she'd be like as Data.

While she was the only female considered, in 2016, Brent Spiner he thought Tilda Swinton possibly playing Data would be cool.
